    Ok...
C.C. or anyone else, are the physical dimensions of the 6v and 12v the same?
That is will they mount up the same with the same bracket ect.?

Oh and thanks for the comment Grits. I assume you are refering to the style of the coupe improving with the early motor ect. If thats the case I thank you. Your coupe is coming along incredibly, as is the Whitedevil coupe, Jays 29 sedan, Marks Roadster P/U and so many of the other projects that are in the works right now.

You guys are a real inspiration, and your advise and comments are always welcome.

    Thanks

Whitedevil coupe? haha I look at your build for some inspiration.....If I knew anything about the dimensions of the 12v/6v I would sure help but I dont. Its funny how everyone looks at everyone elses build threads for inspiration and you never realize that guys are doing the same on your own build..keep it up its looking good!

    I don't think they will but I haven't dealt with a 6 volt generator in 20 years.
You can pick up a Delco-Remy 12 volt generator pretty cheap (this fall I bought a working one for 10 bucks) and I made my mounting bracket. That was for my roadster.

On the Model A build we're doing, I'm just going to pick up a stock GM generator mounting bracket from a junk yard.

Looking Good with that SBC in there with the double hump heads peaking at ya!

    Cool build Rob.

  13. Rob , they made the 12volt generators in two lengths ... Long and short.LOL
Seriously, the short one was the same length as a 6 volt and the longer was more powerful to keep up with the "Pie wagons " accessories and larger cubic inch motors.
I have a couple of short 12 volt ones and maybe a long one that are working. Just give me shout. I can also school you on the regulators if you want. Paul

Rob, I just read the whole build. You are doing a great job. The documentation with the pic's are a huge plus. Even the hurdles that you have jumped through were minor and you even had remedys pretty quick.

Keep at it as I am now subscribed and will be watching for more progress.

Thanks Paul. I will get with you about a Generator and Regulator 101.
I bet alot of folks could use some schooling on regulators and generator use.
If you or anyone else has a wiring diagram ect. please post it hear. That is something I know I will be needing before too long.

Its been a long miserable winter. Spring fever is here and I realize that I am no closer on the coupe than when it first turned cold here.

I was on "the list" at a builders shop in the area. I guess I should say the local superstar. I really wanted to get some talent on the body, but after four months I still have'nt got a spot in the shop. Soooo I guess I will have to move forward on my own.

So now I know why there are so many "Rat Rods" about. Its because none of us know what the fuck we're doing and have to figure it out, sometimes with less than stellar results.

I am dreaming of a sweet 70's rod ready for the track or the cruise nite. Awsome body, bitchen paneled paint job, dripping in chrome! I have the car, I have the money, I have the vision. What I don't have is someone to build it or the talent to do it myself.

With that said we move forward on our perilous journey through the building of this rod. The next stage is the subframe. I thought alot about this and came up with a few ideas.
I know I need a tunnel because of the z in the frame. I thought about making a square tunnel, but thats really not for me. I called all around the metroplex looking for someone to bend some square tubing but no one seemed to have the capability to do it.
I looked around for some type of prefomed steel loops or something, again no luck. So I was forced into doing it myself.

I contacted the good folks at www.woodward-fab.com and they hooked me up with a Pipe/Tube bending kit. Part # SBENDKIT at a cost of $189.00 plus shipping.

    I also ordered this.

The Metabo is a fantastic tool, and I needed to replace the burned up hunk of junk that I was using.
They are pricey at around $100, but well worth it.

The Tube bender arrived yesterday and man it is heavy duty. THe next challeng was to figure out how and where to mount it. Because I was going to be bending from the end of long joints of tubing I needed some space. I needed it to be modular so I could pack it back away when I am finished.

Below are pics of the bender and the system I put together to use it.

I used thick wall 3/4" square tubing. The bender will handle various round tubing, and 3/4, or 1" square. The 3/4 matched the reproduction subrails best so thats what I used.

THe learning curve is pretty steep. I only screwed up about 16" of tubing and then figured it out. All in all it was easy to use. I did start spraying the tubing with PB Blaster so it would come out of the tool easier.

It took me about an hour to set up and bend 4 u-bends.

It took another hour just to determine the best place to set the cross braces in the car. I settled on putting the first one 6 inches from the transmission tailshaft termination. I figured it would best protect me from a runaway driveshaft there. The rear was placed right where the kick up starts, and the center brace splits the two. Check it out.

If you notice the front and rear loops have the cross brace running through the tunnel. I set it up that way to hold the shape while I install the rest of the floor. Once I get all the diagonal bracing and the sheet floor ect. done, I will cut those sections out and cap the ends.

Not sure how to make the cross bracing in the floor. I don't want to obstruct the brake pedals or shift linkage.
I am going to use master cylinder in the floor and lokar for a shifter.
Any pics of floors set up similarly would be super helpful.

Just read through this whole thread. Nice! A build like this is why I love the HAMB. Good job! Very inspiring.
