    Hello,

The Harley Sportster line had metal fenders prepped and ready for body work or paint in 5 to 6 inches for the rear. The rolled ends and edges were fine for the tires to fit inside of the metal body.

The front stock fender was usually at 5 inches wide inside of the rolled edges. So, any tire that can fit inside would have fitment problem ready to adjust and paint to match the hot rod.

    Jnaki

At the time of our Sportster road trips, the front fender was a necessity as rocks or gravel of all shapes and sizes were being kicked up from the road surface. Even sand that had blown across the highway from the daily West winds or onshore winds were a cause for concern. When the tire kicks up road sand, dirt or grime, it is always nice to have a fender to catch the debris. And, not allow it to fly in your face. We tried the Sportster without the front fender, but immediately put it back on to slow down the flow of crapola being kicked up to our faces and bodies.

Several of my friends used the wide 6 inch rear fender for their custom hot rods to cover a 6 inch wide tire at the time. The custom bike shop used the 6 inch wide fender as a base to make a wider fender to fit the wider tires and rims that were just starting to come onto the custom bike builds.

The wider fenders worked right into the custom car/hot rod field as a natural to cover the rear tires. But, it was like a slice in the middle and a strip of metal curved to fit the design was placed. This allowed the width to fit many different size rear tire. Now, the tire was legal and could not be ticketed due to an exposed tire. YRMV

    Note:

One custom three wheel trike build had the widest tire and custom fender, ever.

The wide tires from car racing were the widest tires around. Some were the exact size for the design, but had to have a rolled metal insert welded in place of the split stock width fender. Now, the size of any width tire can be adjusted to fit under any exposed rear fender with the center insert.

The custom wide fender started as a stock width, Harley rear fender and had a 12 inch insert rolled to fit the split stock fender. The wide tires fit perfectly inside of the new wide fender on both sides, prior to paint. YRMV
