    Hello,

This photo was a time when we visited our mom. We had taken her to a local Chevy dealer to get her new car in 1972. But, by the time our son was 5 years old, we had visited many times and each time, we drove her Chevy Nova around to go shopping and getting the week’s groceries for her. She also took us out to a nice lunch or dinner in that Nova sedan.

Back in 1972, she wanted a blue car similar to what our dad had as a Buick sedan. She liked blue. Her choice with our help was a smaller sedan. I wanted her to get the SS version with bucket seats and center console. She wanted one with a bench seat for some unknown reason. So, we settled on a nice v8 powered sedan with spiffy custom wheels from the factory, that the dealer threw in as an incentive for us to buy the blue Chevy Nova sedan.

She drove it for her errands and kept it pristine with weekly hand washings and constant vacuuming. It was always immaculate. It also had low miles. In two years, it had under 3000 miles and the tires still had the nubs that new tires have. It was a pristine car with a V8 motor.

When we told her we were planning on a road trip up to san francisco with camping stops along the coastal areas, she was happy we were doing stuff for our toddler son. So, she offered her car to use on our long road trip. Up the coast from So Cal through Big Sur, Santa Cruz and beyond San Francisco with the last stop back in San Francisco on our way home. The route home was through the inland portion of California with a two night stop in Yosemite National Park.

We knew the Chevy nova would make it as it was fairly new. So, we had a great time in A/C comfort with V8 power on those steep hill climbs in the mountain roads. After our stay in a few lake campgrounds on the other side of Yosemite, we headed home to the Westside of Long Beach.

We felt funny putting on more miles than was on the car that our mom drove daily or somewhat daily back in Long Beach. We had put on 3500 miles and doubled the total miles on the car with one long road trip vacation. So, thanks mom…

The one thing my wife and I noticed is that the trunk in the Chevy Nova was large. But the camping stuff, the suitcases and toddler stuff was packing the trunk to the brim. So, we always talked of getting a larger station wagon for our mom… and yes, for us to borrow again. We could not afford a large station wagon, so we mentioned to our mom that new idea.

This idea floated with me for years until we sold the Chevy Nova in 1986 with 16k miles on it. It was still pristine and still on the original tires. Yikes, a well preserved old car..

So, finally, after all of these years, a 1972 Chevy Nova Two Door Nomad style station wagon was roughly sketched and then detailed. YRMV

After many add on tops, chopping the extension and trying to keep the original lines intact, here is the finished project. Slicks and all, to hold the new 409 power under the hood. Ha, a little old lady from Pasa…. No, Westside of Long Beach. Yes! Cruising down the avenue with a one of a kind Nomad wagon with custom mags.

Does anyone wanna take this on?

Looking for a rendering of this with tires that stick out roughly 3" with JDM style fender flares.

correction: it is harder than you think I think.
I only do customs, for what I do the hard part is matching the background. when you chop a car you have to chop the background too. I like mine to look like a photo. most of my photochop is from my car show pics. these were all stockers, though the black Chevy had the Caddy hubcaps already

    Eh?

I'm never all that bothered about the backgrounds. It's the car that matters to me.

    @themoose @Unclebrad

i don't know if you guys frequent the off topic photoshop thread, can I get someone to remove the engine sticking out of the hood and change the wheels to polished us indy slots with black wall tires with a little more profile, maybe just a 7 or 8 wide wheel in back, not the wide pro street look.
    thanks

i owned a couple early model half cabs and a fiberglass roadster with a 6 point roll cage back in the 80's and 90's.
sold them too soon, before the craze hit.

Daimler SP250 Dart that I was messing with. I always felt like they only just missed the mark with these, as they were rushed to get them into production. So rather than totally restyle it, I tried to make it the best version of the original, with a bunch of subtle mods. Dart-original.jpg Dart-hardtop.jpg

I’ve long felt that the Dart’s basic body design is good, but let down by several details. The fender ‘eyebrows’ and tail fins seem tacked on. The nose is too long, making the front look fish-mouthed. The windshield is squarish and clunky (it does look better with the hardtop in your pic).

It does come across as more poor execution, rather than poor design. I saw an illustration in an old brochure, that of course made the car look great, and wondered why it looked so good.
The nose looks pinched, because it doesn't follow the line of the front tires and it's cut away too much underneath. Not enough of a roll pan and the grille leaning back gives it the fish faced look. Also there's a strange "sag", where the front fenders just sort of give up, and don't transition into the doors and scuttle area at all. So the lines of the car just don't flow. Look at the reflections on the sides, and it just droops.

It does look rather like a cowfish:
    upload_2025-9-30_13-26-59.jpeg
though with bits of catfish, too:
    upload_2025-9-30_13-28-21.jpeg

A car which looked a lot more like a cowfish was the Australian Lightburn Zeta:
    upload_2025-9-30_13-30-25.jpeg
It's a design @Spoggie has played with before.

(I shall not reiterate how much a Citroën Ami 6 looks like an anglerfish wearing horn-rimmed spectacles.)
