I'd be in if we're serious...and had a definite amount to come up with. I think I could talk a few folks into pitching in if there was a set amount.

Nah exchange rate is much better lately, about 80 cents in the dollar so only 1200 NZ fun tickets per share, depending on when this all might come to fruition I could be in for more than one share.
It would be great to be able to say I live in New Zealand but I own part of a dragstrip in Texas. I would be there as often as possible to do my share of the work and turn as much pop into noise and smoke as I can.

  7. I just spoke to the broker. Told him very little other than I was trying to help an investor interested in the property. He's trying to get me a survey which will locate all of the features for us. I gave him my address to send it.

In the meantime, he's sending me a copy of the legal description so I can draw at least a boundary drawing and we can see what 93 acres looks like. And I'm getting an aerial photo- maybe more info there than google?

He seemed very interested in helping.

I was just wondering if it was 500 or 1000. I know more folks would give 500 than 1000. I wouldn't miss 500...so much...but would kinda be hard pressed for 1000. Stellar idea, though. If everyone got together on this and paid cash it would be INSANE!!! Dare I say Quarterly Hamb Drags?!?!?

  9. what existing companys are based in this area?
any major company that has already been established?

  10. I'm working on a new business start up that is VERY HAMB related and would need a US base of operations to really make it viable - if there would be an opportunity here to invest and receive a parcel large enough (and properly zoned - I don't know too much about that aspect), something like an acre or so (I'd like to build a 5000 sq ft. building) to house operations and inventory I'd be in for $10,000 easy.

  13. I'm working on it also doing a business plan. I've talked to him and was going to get these things and call the county recorders office today, but I won't duplicate your efforts to create a ruckus. He said there's an offer for 435K already. It's in bankruptcy so the trustee has to present the offers (with deposits) to the judge when the time comes to close it, then there's 20 days for the other party to outbid you......at that point the judge will hold an auction in the courtroom at a specified date, which the buyers must be present at. So there's no assurance of what it's going to end up at, and no absolute purchase price. If someone stepped up with 465K right now, that wouldn't end it. The final federal BK trustee's recommendation to the judge reigns supreme & he has the obligation to creditors to recover the most money.

Plus as far as being tight lipped, if you search "dragstrip insurance" on google, the whole damn thread comes up 3rd from the top.:)

Dammit I was hoping you hadn't noticed. Oh well at least you can come here cheaper! And you can stay in the trailer and ride in the Hambulance with me. LOL.

And Big Dad don't worry none about the preaching. I have the exact same arrangement with the man as you do. I'll just say a few words as needed no more no less.

But remember you need to have holy water for the wet t-shirt and string bikini contests.

May I propose one by law or alright two or three?
Can there be a size limit to the string bikini wearers?
No men in speedos or string bikinis! (HankCash!)
And if it looks like it was feloniouslty assualted with the ugly stick no go either.

Has an enviromental hazard study been done? This is important. There is so much shit to deal with on commercial real estate. The storage building with the barrels next to it is scary.

  17. That's on the list also. Which you're right is a major thing. Just like an old gas station with old style tanks in the ground. It's all ok until it changes hands, then the next owner has a 50K dig up and surrounding ground cleanup. If people have changed, spilled or drained oil, anti-freeze, fuel, etc. and they find it it could be the deal killer.

50k would be cheap..The EPA can wreck your whole world in a matter of days.I know I sound like an old fart worrying about that stuff but I've had experience with it years ago and they are a lot worse now.

  19. The broker sent a copy of the aerial and the legal description. The photo isn't very close. Also, I can't make the boundaries close and alerted him. He is still trying to get a survey. In the mean time- I put this drawing together.

The larger blocks of space represent 1 acre lots. The smaller ones close to 1/2 acre.
The entire north property line is a dirt road. I think it could be lined with shops or STORAGE UNITS. I think storage is the key to buying in at reasonable costs. Life time storage? And it's on the spectator side which wouldn't interfere with operations.

I've just barely scratched the surface but without an accurate survey showing where the strip sits, that's about all I can do.

    Attached Files:

  20. Chucci's Rod and Custom is less then a 1/4 mile away on FM 450, the same road as the strip. Give Bob Chucci a call (903) 668-4697. He is a long time Hallsville resident, retired shop teacher at the local high school and vivid rodder. He might have some local insite.

  21. Here's the aerial photo with the mistake. The right side isn't in the legal description. If the offer they have is based on this at all, who knows, it might go away?

  23. As mentioned by several others, a share-type arrangement where more $$ get's you more access/privileges/land or whatever is a good idea - those with less to invest still get their money's worth.

Also, allowing investors to run businesses on site would be extremely beneficial and probably attract more interested parties - that would be my primary draw to the whole deal. I can see a strip of shops, like a dragstrip version of Gasoline Alley (hell, maybe we could even "borrow" the name;)) running along one side of the property. I'd like one for my business (as I mentioned earlier) and would probably build a small suite so I could stay on site when I need to be down there which would be about 1 week per month. Thought a flight into Shreveport might be the best as it seems to be the closest "big" city (don't know anything about it, if it has a major airport or not). Who knows about business tax in Texas?

Are you saying X'd out area on the aerial photo is part of the 95 acres and not for sale or?

  25. No, it shouldn't have been included in the shaded area. Only the red area to the left of the big X. It's still 93 plus acres. This was the photo the broker sent me.

My take on the building is that it's the fuel shack. Where ya go to buy race fuel. Empty drums outside.

You've got my attention! My little sister moved to Austin this last year and has been nudging me come back to Texas (I grew up in Houston as a pre-teen) for a look see (by the way, they had never been to Austin before, and just fell in love with it).

If you guys are talking buildable acres or lots set up like the flyboys or golfers do, even as a gated community, and the taxes were within reason, even though I might be several years from throwing up a building, I think I'd have to seriously consider buying in. The idea of a shop/garage with a house/apartment on top with outdoor storage sounds really appealing. If the zoning permitted, an area for hot rod related commercial enterprises as neighbors on site seems reasonable and could definitely put this idea over the top.

Compared to what buildable land generally goes for around here, 10 grand an acre would seem cheap.

Here's a few off the top of my head questions, I'm sure other interested HAMBers can and will come up with many more.

What are acres of land going for generally in that area?

Is there a large enough number of HAMBers willing to commit to buying lots or acreage to finance this thing as a community of common interest development? If so are they willing to form a neighborhood association and pay the required dues?

It would seem a number of people considering this are, or will be soon, retirees looking for a place to land (myself included), are there social services of sufficient quantity and quality close enough by to service a community like this that might have a fair number of "older" citizens?

Is there enough land beyond the buildable sites to set up a Thousand Trails type of RV park for those willing to pay an initiation fee and annual maintenance fees to get access for a few weeks a year? If so, what about the possibility of building a "hobby shop" for their use?

I for one would like to see the use of the drag strip used by members of the association as opposed to using it as a commercial venue and dealing with all the attending problems, are others here expressing a real interest in this idea of similar mind?

Questions aside, if this thing flies, count me in! Even if I had to commute from Dallas or Austin, this thing is appealing. I might even get my sister interested in buying in.

Oh did I mention that I have spent the last 35 years in the metal building industry fabricating, erecting, and managing a components factory. I think I can be of use to the community
