Hey John, looks like you're still movin' forward on the Merc, Looks great..... Love to see it in person when its done. My Mercs still right where you saw it last. I have collected a few parts for it lately tho. I've been trying to get my r*t truck finished 1st. Keep up[ the good work, Tom

  3. Hey Tom, hope you are well. I bought a trunk lid and hood from that guy Kurt who is not too far from you. He chopped his 49-50 and was parting out a moredoor.

I was just having a 15 minute convo with my painter. He added another jelcoat to the Winfield skirts, felt that they were too thin. He has to do a little more work fitting the skirts to the car. Then one more walkaround looking for pinholes and final prime.

We are talking a black with a little bit of blue in it... non-metallic.

If anyone has any super dark blue non-metallic suggestions post 'em up, we can paint a few test panels and then decide.

Thanks again to the friends I've made during the project.

  5. WHAT!!!!!! Cal Smoothy! Say it ain't so Joe...

Modern shit on a Merc really kills the appeal when you get ready to sell it. I'm not talking about brakes or drive lines, but interior, lights, wheels, steering columns, stereos.

  6. I have a set of '55 Studebaker caps for my car, those are very trad.

    But I also like these:

I am trying to get a VW out of the garage in order to even begin to play with my Merc. But I am gathering shit still. and will be going at it like the Hammers of Hell in a little while.

  9. I looked at my Monarch this summer. That was about it. Bought some brake parts for it, but house renos took up most of my free time. I did manage to sit in it once and make vroom vroom noises:(

my 56 is coming along pretty good ,ill try to post some pics..

  11. OUCH!!! Too Cadzilla for me...

  12. Those wheels on your Merc? HELP! Then all your efforts turning it into a stylish custom will be lost...
Please, go for the '55 Studebaker instead, they are beautiful and classic. And to the wheels a set of Firestone 7.10 15 WW.

A solid dark blue...should not be hard for a skilled painter to mix a custom colour. When talking about dark solids I more think of mid- late 30's luxury cars... A friend of mine did have a '38 Packard that did look black but actually was very dark blue. Custom mixed nitrocellulose (painted in the 1970's) a stunning paint job that still is on of the best I ever seen (a 100 point car...). But on photos you cant tell that the car is dark blue, it looks black...

  14. These are the style Studie caps I have:

I'm not sure yet what it will take to get to work with my current steel rims, so if it's a major pain I might do spider caps just to have something that does not look raw.

The rim I posted above I like I'll just run them and not tell you guys. :)

Actually I'm keeping the car pretty trad and those smoothies won't happen since I gotta spend a few g's on the interior.

  15. This is the only Merc I have seen that smoothies seem to work on.

  16. John, check out 57 chevy "harbour blue" not super dark though, more of a medium to dark. I've been wafling back and forth over that and dark green for years on my car.

  17. Django of HRCC and Chrome Czars fame suggested this "dark sea blue" which I guess was used on planes?

    Ford BB 523 blown
    Lenco 5 speed
3.25 rear gear first four of the Lenco is like a 4.56 on the street, then 5th 1 to 1 for cruising.

    Power steering
    Power windows
    4 wheel disk brakes
4 inchs off the ground with skirts

  24. Just looked, and man the wheels on Cadzilla are pretty nice. They are Boyd wheels.

I need a dash, what other car dash that is pre 1957 would work in the car? I'd do a '49 but folks want big money for those.

  25. 55 olds, but, theres alot of cutting involved. I know guy that has one in a 51.

Hey John, in the current issue of Scale Auto there is a model of a '49 that the builder said he painted it Mercedes Caspian Blue, "It's a rich dark pearl blue with a hint of teal in direct light". It looks like a preaty dark color in print though.

  27. Nice, but looks like it has metallic in it:

  28. Hmmm here's a question... So a custom built in say 1951-1955 would have been painted with lacquer right? How often would a custom have any metallic or semi-metallic paint in that era?

  29. Very often! I would say that at least 75% of the classy kustoms that was shown in magazines from those days did have metallic paint....

  30. So of the say 10 oldest Mercs, how many have metallic paint, anyone know?
