Customs How are everyone's Mercury projects coming along?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pro Stock John, Jul 14, 2009.

  1. No problem! Just to mention a few of the more well known early built 49-51 Merc customs (customized between 1949-1953). I think its easy to see that the organic metallics was the prefered choice for customs in the early 50's...

Sam Barris -49 Dark green metallic
Fred Rowe -51 Dark maroon metallic
Ralph Testa -50 Dark purple metallic
Louie Bettancourt -49 (first version, Ayala) Lime metallic
Louie Bettancourt -49 (second version, Barris) Maroon metallic
Buddy Alcorn -50, Dark plum metallic
Bob Hirohata -51 (first version, Barris), Two-tone solid paint seamfom and dark green
Bob Hirohata -51 (second version, Barris), Two-tone Gold and green metallic
Dave Bugarin -51, Two-tone dark and light blue metallic
Jerry Quesnel -49, Dark purple metallic
    Wally Welch -50, Lime metallic
Gene Winfield -50, Gold and green metallic

For your Merc I would say go for a dark blue metallic...

  2. RPW, thanks very very very much.

Some colors my painter was researching (1960 - 1970 colors):

    Daytona blue
    Danube blue
    deepwater blue
    Fathom blue
    dusk blue

  3. John, I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that there were only one or two metallic paints. Dark Green and Burgandy. I think dark green was the first, and thats why it was so popular.

  4. Gotcha. I'm digging '64 Corvette Daytona blue, and that fighter pilot blue that was posted in the 'dark dark blue' thread. blue during the day, and black at night.

  5. John,
I would go with your first choice, I wouldn't start rethinking the color. That fighter color looks cool.

  6. What was my first choice again? :)

I really like that fighter dark sea blue, I send the gloss paint codes I found to my painter to see what he can find. Let's call '64 Corvette Daytona blue #2, and 1950 Ford Sheridan blue can be third.

  7. HOLY SHIT JOHN! Are you STILL waiting on the fuckin painter? What's the name of his shop "One-year Paint"? I can't believe it's not done yet! What gives????

  8. Yes,but those are Moon discs.NOT billet wheels. HUGE difference...

  9. I'm still waiting. This is why I stopped messing with old cars back in 1994 and went to late models (98+ Camaro/Firebirds).

Picking my 53 up Friday at the paint shop, Daytona Blue Pearl Metaillic from Hot Rod Flatz; early visits last week looked good. Plating parts should be back early next week and should have it back on the road inside a couple weeks.

  17. Does anyone have any pictures of 49-51 Mercs built in the late 50's ? I'm thinking something built from 55 - 59

My '51 is out back under a tarp, serving as housing for the local rodents, unfortunately...

Hey, do any of you guys have stock '51 door panels or just the panel trim for a two-door? I'm also looking for a '51 Lincoln rear bumper - Anyone?

John check out a '56 or '57 Dodge Royal Blue Metallic. I painted a '54 Ford with it in 1961.

If you look at mine you'll see I'm partial to Blue metallics.

John...Is it time to yank it out of there ? Or at least give HIM the deadline ? I know a place in Oak Lawn looking for work if you get fed up.

Kool idea. Have you checked out Rikster web site? It is the Kustom Bible and has a lot
of kool Kustom ideas....Below is the Merc link.

My Merc project is going to schedule. Just recently re-design the inner fender well to
give my tires more room. I can kruize now without tire rubbing. Started working on
restoring my 53 Buick steering wheel, can't wait to get it on the Merc.

    Happy Trails,

Good point, mine arent getting worked on either.

  27. Just to share a little slice of history, dont just look at this plane for the color. Look at the stance of it, higher in the front and just flows and tapers away at the back. In the early days of customizing this is the look the guys were going for, this and the early ChrisChraft boats.I know there are a lot of people on here who dont like the old stance and prefer " Layin Frame" bt this is the way it was and this is the way it is for some of us still today.

  28. Mercury Abuse right here.

  29. HAHAHA Come on Jeff we all know how much you love bags.:D

Very good point about the flow of fighter planes. Sexy and mean just like a custom should be.

Jeff, your post is so kool!

I've not read or heard about comparing the taildragger stance to airplanes and or boats before.....Stance is everything. Amen brother!!

    Happy Trails,
