I didn't realize you painted your Merc WHITE! Come on! We're all as anxious as you are to see it!

  4. Since the beginning of the car's redo, I bought a different hood, trunk lid, rear window glass (mine was scratched), gas filler from a Hudson, different taillights, and those skirts off the top of my head. Those skirts don't the way my old ones did, so Paul is figuring out what needs to happen.

  5. What needs to happen is it needs to get painted:rolleyes:

My wife was speechless when I started taking her car apart getting it ready to work on.
The bastards so big its taken me a while to want to tackle this project!

Pulled the locked up motor out. Took the front sheet metal off and pulled the 4 door stuff off.
Over the last 2 years, I picked up 2 coupe doors, b pillar, 1 piece 49 rear window, quarter windows, drop spindles and rear fenders for a coupe.

Shit rolls down hill fast looks like I have started!

I'm confused, all this time that's it ?

  10. The progress does not look significant, but I will say, the car had a ton of bondo and was pretty wavy. So fixing the bodywork etc., has been four times the work that was anticipated. The rear of the car had been hit at some point, so when the car was painted and done up whoever did it never fixed all the proportions. So the decklid was pushed in 1/2-3/4 inch and everything in back was off. There was a weird gap when you closed the trunk. The driver's side rear had been hit too, and there was a 1/2 inch coat of bondo over most of the quarter. There was so much bondo that the crappy bubble gum welds around the original fuel door were covered... and so on and so on.

Now those Winfield skirts don't follow the lower contour of the body, so that creates another small challenge.

I'd like to be done and driving around so I'll try to work with Paul to stick to a timeline and get it done in the next 4-8 weeks.

I finally got my stance where I want it and a nice set of wide whites that I've been eying for too long.

As far as the engine goes I'm almost done, I'm going to have the cam ground out to Isky Max-1 specs and get some risers for the carbs. Sparkplug wire looms are in the mail as we speak to route them up from underneath.

Oh and since that picture was taken we've installed an Ampco top cylinder lubricator and true dual headers. Got rid of that ridiculous stock exhaust set up.

The only things left are the paint and interior.
One of the boys in the club is in tech school to learn body work and paint right now and I'm working on teaching myself upholstery.
The whole idea behind my club is "do the work your goddamn self." :D

You can fit the skirts in less than a day & I'm slow as hell.
Is this body man in prison and only gets out 1 weekend a month ?

  16. Yes a furlough program.

  20. Hey guys,

I called my bodyshop guy and gave him a deadline of March 15th, at which point I would pull the car. I told him that the car would have be painted by then. The glass did not have to be back in, and little stuff, but it has to be painted by then. The conversation was pretty direct, but we both avoided having it boil over.

If any of you guys ever are by the Sout side of Chicago (90th and Harlem) pm me and I'll tell you where the body shop is and you can drop in and check the car out.

Thanks again guys. What a long day it's been (work was kicking my ass today). :(

My Comet's coming along nicely. Got the body completely in primer, now putting a new rear end under it, cutting the rear fender wells, and then disassembly for paint!

a lot of updates here! floors done, dash repainted, car back on the ground to test the suspension but it still needs some tuning, fronts too low backs too high so we're raising the front 2 1/2" inches and the back another inch...hard to tell with it in the garage through pics.

Light champagne painted into the inserts, masking the chrome was real fun lol

dash is just primed black for now, interior pieces will all be white later on, chrome and overall condition of the dash isnt mint but neither is the car : ) so this along with the rest of the shinny stuff on the car will match just right, its not pitted, its character haha

well, i just brought my latest merc home a local started this project and was doing quality hammer welding but health issues unfortunatly forced him to sell it,when I was a kid my brother and I stuck a 428 fe in his 50 4dr, later I bought a baby lincoln which I resto rodded with with blck paint, visor, lowered suspension, and a buick mill.then I had an oold time 27 t roadster pu I traded for a 50 merc 4dr with a 460 ford and torino suspension which I still have, now like I said I brought home thislatest merc with a 5 inch chop, this is my dream car and I am considering my options carefully. Here,s a buch of pics.
