I bought the same motor off an old man in San Diego a few months ago for $50. Planned on putting it in my '29 roadster and changed my mind after finding out how much it cost to rebuild the things. Cheapest rebuild kit i found was like $4000, just for a kit, plus machining and all that junk.

Killer mills though, definitely don't see them, ever. Heavy as hell though. I ended up selling mine a few months ago on ebay, I ended up getting like $500 for it.

Check the numbers and see what it came out of. If it is out of the Goldenhawks they are worth some bucks.

Put it in a hot rod though, I wish I would have.

I attached a pic of mine and the old man I picked it up from throwin it around with his od Ford tractor.

    GOD BLESS

I didnt see that it was a running motor. I got $500 for mine and it wasnt near running or as complete as that motor. I sold it to this old Packard guy who is president of some packard club. He acted like he was ripping me off. I'd look into the matter if I were you.

those motors stock were a cool gold and black color, with chrome valve covers and a batwing air cleaner!

Not all were gold, some were beige and they didn't have chrome valve covers or air cleaners from the factory.

I paid $150 for my entire drivetrain, ****'s still running but when it blows up I'll prolly put an Olds or a Caddy in it, maybe a nailhead, I don't know, whatever I can find cheap.

  12. Hell, I'd even consider putting on in my Packard. That 4k rebuild price tag scares me though.

Parts are expensive, $45 for ONE head gasket.

PS, I have a dual quad intake for it.

I have pics of a 6-71 supercharged 374 Packard in an FED from a 1959 little book, I gotta find it and scan it.

  14. Gordy Cushman in Rockford IL (who built my poncho 389) has a very nice Packard flat 6 sitting in his shop. Don't think he's selling it tho.

The starter looks new, the rest is pretty clean too. I wonder what advantages this engine would have over any other? well other than the cool factor.

P.S. Packard made those Merlin Motors for PT boats.

No advantage, they're heavier than hell and have inherent oil pump cavitation problems, they are torque monsters though. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, a '56 dual quad Packard 374 engined Carribean would outrun a Chrysler 300, it might even have been the fastest American made car that year.

I tell you what, that engine designed for a 4500 lb car will pull my lightweight '34 Ford around quite rapidly.

  18. Well, speak up, in a PM of course. I need doors for a 2 door '48 - '50.

  19. Packard stuff, yes...Packard V8s, no. Not so far. Or do you know where one is at, ya dirty porch-poopin' Packard-parts-pilferin' dog?? :D

Plus just about every one in a WWII Mustang as well.

Did Hudson or Nash make any V8's? I thought for sure I saw a later 50's Hornet with a V8 badge on it once. I don't think Nash ever built anything bigger than a straight 6.

The Hudson V8 is the Packard engine but a smaller displacement, only 320 ci.

  23. Whereupon Packard mgmt., I believe James J. Nance when he came into power, informed Hudson/Nash/Kelvinator that they would no longer supply V8 engines after the end of that current model year....leading the new AMC to design their own V8 in a very short time period, less than a year if memory serves, the engine line that eventually produced the 327 AMC.

I suppose that AMC had something of a last laugh as Packard merged with Studebaker two years later & basically disappeared with the "Packardbaker" models.

A friend of mine bought a couple of 50s Packards at an estate sale this summer. When he got home and lifted the hood on the 56, this is what he saw!

  25. Yep, they laughed all the way to the bankruptcy.... Good thing Renault came through with superior French engineering and saved them. D'OH!!!!

  26. Well, yeah, but that was 25 years later!

Are you...are you saying that AMC went BANKRUPT?? How could that happen!!!

Good thing I'VE got all my money in a nice, solid company. Enron.;)

NADS - I want that dual intake - PM what you want for it!!! I have a Packard V8 but its in my Packard. I'd love a set of those Clipper valve covers if any one has found those in the junk yards. There are oil problems, mostly just low pressure at the heads. Some old guys in the Packard V8 club have created an adapter to put a high volume oil pump from an Olds in the Packard v8. Just finished switching out mine and the adapter works great. New pump seems to be flowing just fine. Hot rods with a packard would be cool since they are not used often outside of the original cars.
