I went into the shop today to clean up before I spray some test panels to discover theres a bunch of HUGE wasps buzzing around in there. I'm allergic to those bastards something fierce so I'm looking for suggestions to keep them OUT! I'll get some spray to kill the ones that are in there, but is there anything I can do to keep more from coming in?

  2. I use a bunch of good spray at the beginning of each summer and they don't seem to come back too bad. Maybe a fogger, those seem to be a little more permanent.

I once shot one of those bastards out of the air with a staple gun from 10 feet.. no joke.

I just ran out of spray, and I doubt I'm a good with a staple gun as you are. The two i hit with the spray FREAKED. They were attacking everything they could land on. I ran outside and watched them through the window. I guess they get in around the garage door opening since it doesn't seal perfectly. I'll have to look into the foggers...

What you need is a whole mess of badgers. Badgers love to eat wasps and their nests.

Just fill your shop up with badgers and you'll be set.

    Switch -

I'm soo allergic to them that the doc sez I have to give myself the shot and go straight to the hospital and announce that I've got about 20 minutes before they hafta watch me real close. Sold the motorcycles after hearing that - and that the cure (epinephrine) can cause a middle-aged heart to go, 'pop!'

    Anyway - da wasps...

chances are you have a nest somewheres in the eaves of yer shop. the only reason they swarm like that is that there's a nest nearby - you've got to locate that nest and knock 'em dead at the source.

Wasps are basically light-powered; they go dormant right about the time the sun goes down, and don't get to buzzin' until mid morning or so. Do your nest huntin' at dawn or dusk - once you find the nest, soak it with spray.

Don't think because you found one nest that that's all there is - I've gone on nest hunts and found 4-5 in the same area. Most are smallish (an inch or two in diameter) but they can be as big as a basketball. DO NOT attempt to knock the damned thing down - even in the dark. Wait a week or two B4 removing the nest to make sure ALL the little buggers are dead!

Find the nest and get rid of it , as for helping keep them away you can take brown paper lunch bags and stuff some newspaper in them and tie of the end. Hang a few of these were you think the wasps are getting and and they will stay away. Wasps are territorial and see the bags and believe they are a established nest. We have done this for years at our summer cabin in and around the deck and havent had a new nest. I learned this while working for my uncle doing pest control and extermination.

Didn't know that bit about them being light powered. So would they not want to be in my shop if I blocked all the windows? :D I'll spray paint em' black if it'll help! One was in my car yessterday when I was leaving to go to work, I just started the car, opened both doors and waited.....I hate the damn things.

What kind of wasps are they? If they're paper or mud wasps, you'll find the nests somewhere out of the weather with access to the outside. Usually in an underhang or near a door edge. They'll also get into siding.
Yellow Jackets are ground nesters and will have burrows/nests anywhere. I've seen them nest in pipes, lawns, rotten logs...
Brake parts cleaner will usually kill them, sometimes cheaper than insecticide.
Don't crush them or swat them. Crushed wasps give off an odor that aggravates other wasps in the area.
If you're allergic, DEFINITELY GET SOMEONE ELSE TO KILL THEM!!!!!!!

Agreed! We do the same over this way.
Hang one in a doorway and it helps keep wasps and other flys out because regular flies don't seem to like passing near a wasp nest.

Man, I hate wasps and spiders....:(

  11. Then get some lions to get rid of the badgers. That will solve the problem.

That brown paper bag idea sounds awsome, im gonna have to put some in my shed, every weekend when i go to mow theres a new nest there, and right outside the garage door. You kill them one week and the next theres another nest. Im not alergic to them, but being stung isnt fun. Not fun at all.

you can make a wasp trap out of an old plastic pop bottle not sure if they are 1 or 2 litre jugs, been a bit since I suckled on one of them babies, anyways lop the top off then turn it upside down (the top) and stuff it back in the bottle so its like a funnel on top but tough to get out of once them heathens are trapped in the bottle, put some sugar sweetened water in the jug for bait (about 1/4 full would be more than sufficient) and them wasps will drown in there

Used to have mud dobers all the time. I use 3 foggers about every month in a 20 x 26 garage, whether I see any or not. Haven't had a problem for years.

I hate wasps too. Not sure if I'm allergic or not, been stung multiple times, but only had my hand swell up once. Definitely will have to try the paper bag idea! They're the main reason I don't go into the shed in the summer...

I don't know if I would jump straight to lions, I'd probably go with brown bears to get rid of the badgers. Lions, I'd use them on the bears. Then clean the whole mess up with some mutant lizard men, with lasers strapped to their heads.

    That's just me...

The little flying bags of poison hate mothballs. Hang some in a sock (or paper bag), when they burn your eyes stuff it in a chinese soup container, for future use.

  18. Maybe there in Ohio. Here in Cali there is a whole sub-species of lizard women. Once you trap a few at the mall, it is pretty easy to get your mutant lizard man army started.

As a kid, I got stung a buncha times with no effect.

About ten years ago a yellowjacket nailed me in the leg - whole leg swelled up for a couple of days.

Two years later - stung in the foot; EVERYTHING swelled up. You know your in trouble when the insides of your ears start itchin - you got about 40 minutes (tops) B4 your insides start swellin' up.

Closest call was about 4 years ago; got hit 5 times 36 miles from a hospital. shot didn't work - my brother drove the car at the speed limiter to the hospital (little over 20 minutes) and got me there in full anaphlaxic shock. I'd swelled up to 150% of normal size - looked like Fred Flinstone.

They're nothing to mess with - and if you're allergic to one type - you're allergic to them all. After being stung three different times on a motorcycle, that was it for me. I can't even cut my own grass anymore - risk is too great.

the bag is a new thing for me - I'm gonna hafta try that; good idea!

I use a shot gun. Way better than a rifle cause the shot sprays everywhere. I ruined my granpas rolls royce, but I think I got a couple wasps.:D

The lizard men aren't hard to come by but the downside is they can only be killed by a wasp's sting.

I just spray the nest and leave it as a warning to all their friends.

So it's incremental? I have been stung many times by those little bastards! Nose (yeah, rudolph....) legs, etc. I like to go out in the evening and pick em off with my BB gun. At least there's some sport in it, and I love it when I nail one!

I'm gonna have to try that bag idea this summer too. They tried building nests in my garage above the workbench last summer. Pissed me off. I had to spray them, and it got all over everything.

I rode motorcycles for years and never had a problem. That's the last thing I was worried about. Didn't know you could get stung going that fast.

It all comes down to realizing that they are always there in the summer. I walk the perimeter of the house in the evenings looking for nests. Mud-dobbers around here build them in places you wouldn't think of.

Whenever anything buzzes by in the garage, I take notice. Got one with a hockey stick once too!

There's some stuff in s spray can called jet foam or wasp foam and it works like a hot damn. When you find a nest you spray the foam at the entrance from a distance and it seals it off so the little buggers can't come out. If they touch the stuff they die instantly. Once the entrance is sealed you connect a tube to the nozzle (like a wd40 tube) and push it into the nest through the side and fill it with foam. They all die!!! I don't know what the stuff is but it kills em good! It even smells kinda purty. Not as much fun as a carb cleaner flame thrower but way more effective.

We don't have wasps, but we do have yellow jackets. Do wasps like sweet stuff like yellow jackets? They sell yellow jacket traps at stores. It's a funky cap for a 2 liter soda bottle along with a recipe for the stuff to attract them. It really works. You have to empty the bottle every couple of days. Half a dozen of those and you can reduce the local population while you track down the nest.

Had one fly up my pant leg when I was 8, stung me seven times before I got my pants down, that hurt.

As for the lizard men, hes got one in his avatar, just ask him to borrow him for a couple days, that should do the trick.
