How did you decide what color to paint your ride?

I've been mulling this over and over for 2 1/2 years now. Not too long ago I thought I'd do it copper, now I'm not sure. Lots of new copper rides out this year. I love the color but I want something unique, as unique as an Oldsmobile ragtop is.

I also love the color purple, dark purple, but I had a dark purple ride already and I want something different now. Forget black, way too hard to keep clean, I'm as far removed from being a detailer as one could get. Forget red, yellow, white, etc, way too normal, and boring. And I know we're on the same page as far as pastels and such [IMG] I'm thinking he needs to be a metallic to show off his body lines and a darker color would suit him better then lighter.

How did you guys go about chosen the color for your rides? This has got to be the most difficult of all the decisions I've made to date regarding Big Olds.

I'm soooo confused, and the decision has to be made soon. [IMG]

It can be a hard call to make. I would go to car nut's site and look around. [IMG]

The day you bought it you must had a vision of what you wanted it to look in the future stick to that.
I choose color first then build,in my mind the result get better.

picking colors sucks. after 15 years as a painter in a body shop i still have problems. most of the time i pick a late model color and change the mix alittle with diffrent oarse flake or other pearl effects. most stock colors look better when sprayed by a good painter who knows how to make the flake or pearls stand up.

    good luck

I go with my gut as to what color I might WANT a car painted...but in reality, I'm not much into paint and bodywork, so if a car of mine ever DOES get sprayed, it comes down to whatever color I can score the most of in spray cans!

Had my El Camino painted by a couple of friends...at about midnight one warm June day! We had almost enough black laquer, and almost enough black enamel...so we mixed 'em!

(I know...I KNOW...ya ain't supposed to DO that...and the paint had a funky finish to it...but it was all one color finally and it was made for da MUD, so 'twernt no show truck!)

Other cars got engine enamel...Chevy orange on a Mopar wagon, and Ford blue on a 68 Chevelle!

As for Big Olds...how ya feel about a darker, metallic green?

I'll stop by and let ya check out the color on my beater if ya want...not 'from down the street looking at the ricer' looking...but up close...it's a REALLY cool sparkly metallic green...and should be easy to get, as it's only four years old and a GM color! You can jot down the paint code if ya like it.

(I dig purple, too...want my Chevy done in purple if it ever gets that far...but more of a basic "Grimace" purple than the really dark purple your old car was)

Maybe you'd like the black on '02-04 Hondas.
It's got a really nice blue pearl flake in it that sparkles just right...
Common as hell on Hondas. Not so on rods!

the color on my blue truck I saw out of the corner of my eye in the fifth row back as I passed the car lot of a Chevy dealer at 35 mph, back in '91. Iwent around the bock and into th lot to see what it was. It turned out to be a POS '91 Geo Metro painted what they called "Competition Blue"
The salesman who greated us as soon as we parked was thinking hed sell me the car and got the keys and opened the hood so I could get the paint code. I took his card just so he didn't think I was totally skating him, at least not that day...

I like to paint cars some maker's factory color, because that way, WHEN I need more of it to fix owies, I can get it mixed by formula.

How about an orangish color instead of the copper? It would be almost the same but different. You got any pics of your old ride? I'd like to see what the purple looks like. later plmczy

Those fat fender's look sexy with rich, metalic color's. Copper's, fawn's and gold tone's. Black look's lower, serious and never fail's. Yes, the pastels will give a dated look. Look up some of the more up-scale car color's at auto paint store. Elegant, or more bold is another question.

I think cruising the new car lots is a good idea. The copper alot of people use is a late model ford ranger color. Just ignor what car your looking at and watch the colors. It's a LOT easier when you see a whole car in it vs. a paint chip.

Yes, I had a vision, a vision that is not appealing to me 2 1/2 years later and IF I did still want to forfill that vision, I would get kicked off the HAMB [IMG]

The purple color that my '47 Chevy was painted was a 94/95 Camaro color called Hawaiian Orchid. If I did go with purple this time around, I'm very attracted to that 95 Ford color purple that the Ford Rangers are painted.

I have visited almost every different auto manufacturer dealership looking at colors. I've spent many lunch hours at the painters supply place looking at all the different color chips. I've dragged friends to look at colors and picked their brains. I wanna choose the right color, I can't afford to make a mistake, I'm only getting one shot at this and the color of Big Olds is something I'm going to have to look at for a long, long time.

Seriously though Mike, how do your customers choose? Do they know exactly what they want by the time they get to you or is it a difficult decision for them as well? Is my confusion normal? [IMG]

how about a lighter purple base with a mild scallop job in a darker purple for accents. 1960 caddies had a real cool light purple that i am probably going to use on the 55 plymouth for my wife but with lots of pearl and flake tricks and a not so mild scallop job. either that or i'll get a gallon of orion silver and a can of candy purple concentrate and tint it to my silvery purple liking...ken...
