Technical how did you paint that? fixtures and taping technics

thanks me too. even if some of the stuff seams simple, it may "spark" an idea when needed.

 

this cab could have been painted, inside and out, all at one time but trying to keep the hidden dust/dirt, that is hiding in the nooks and crannies of the inside, from getting on the out side, is impossible. i painted the insides and bottom first and any edges first. i also painted the hard to get spots on the outside, for example the backs of the hinges, the inside of the rain gutter, around the window, the underside of the cowl drain and the cowl vent channels. these are the areas that are hard to paint thoroughly without making a run/sag. by painting these areas prior to wet sanding i can be assured the areas have enough paint that when i do the final paint i don't risk a run.
taping off all the insides, including holes will assure that the dust from the inside will not get in the paint.

needed to paint the custom nose/grille for my rod....think ala kart and found the best way to do it was bolt it to
my engine stand....was able to rotate it for perfect coverage

 

this is how i paint wheels now, but i would like to find a better way. i spin these as i spray by hand, only touching the inner rim that doesn't show.

 

I made brackets to hang chains from the walls. Majority of things can be hung by wire, put on a saw horse or on top of a table.

 

I'll play along. I built a wooden rack for the doors on my 46. I fastened it to the ceiling beams. I used 3/4" plywood on the sides this slid perfectly up into the window channels perfectly.

Anything round and painted on two sides

 

I pick up cheap engine stands and made a couple to my own specs to use for painting. Here's one of my deck lid and a couple of my fenders on them. I used some scraps of Kindorf I scrounged up for the mounting arms. The work well for working on them, painting & sandblasting............................

 

. Made these little stands to stabilize these buckets. I used this expanded metal table top to lightly bolt the bases to.

 

I learned a couple of tricks from my community college auto body class teacher. If you are painting a car and not removing the windshield or rear window, and it is held in with a rubber gasket/molding, shove a piece of string or wire between the gasket and the body to hold them apart. Makes taping easier and gets some paint down under the gasket.

The other doesn't directly involve painting. I had a couple of dime size holes in my window channel that I was fumbling trying to wedge a piece of metal in to weld. The teacher took the stud gun, zapped a stud to it, held it in the hole with that while he tacked it in. Duh..

 

no holes in this air filter oil tray so i stuck a magnet to it and hooked the magnet

 

back side of dash painted gloss white with a spray bomb before installation. this makes working under the dash easier/brighter.

Hung my headlight bar to prime it...what a pain. Plywood and two pieces of ready rod will make painting it much easier.

 

Set up your paint area with unistrut on the ceiling. You can get it at lowes, or almost any salvage yard as scrap. Sure makes hanging parts easy. The posts that stop signs are put in with is about the same material in square, but I can't recommend stealing stop signs

 

wrapped a magnet in paper, stuck it to a stand, this holds small parts for priming.

 

an extra piece of wire added to the end of a part gives you a handle to lift and twist to insure complete coverage.

 

I love that magnet idea!! I will be using that one.

 

. My third hand paper/ tape dispenser. Mount it in the vise. Old bearing race. A piece of conduit with a dowel pin and some 1/4" plate.

I made this rotisserie last week to hold my hood for body work and painting. It will allow my to tilt it from side to side so that I can work the middle of the hood without leaning out over it. The other stand
holds the two front fenders. The metal tubing is recycled shipping pallets given to me by a friend.

Great thread!!! Something I find handy is a "Lazy Susan "turn table for painting small parts.

 

something sometimes is better than nothing. needed protection from the elements.
brush and roller, prime and paint the inside of the bed.

 

Modified the stands to hold the bumper

...and if you power the lazy susan with an old electric rotisserie motor it turns itself at a perfect speed. Also works to weld around round parts.
