I have an old starter from an old MG that is not available anymore. The field coils seem to be grounded to the case. Can anyone tell me how to loosen the screws that hold the "shoes" the coils are fastened to and what I need to do to repair the coil. It appears to be wound with flat copper strip. I am thinking about heating the screws that hold the shoes but I don't want to do any more damage to the coils in the process. If anyone has repaired field coils before I could sure use some instruction and advice. Trust me if I could buy a new one I would but they are not available (at least at a reasonalble price).

  2. There is a device called an impact driver. Most of the time they have a mix of screw-driver bits that are straight and phillips head. Motorcycle guys use them all the time. The cool thing is you use a hammer to operate it.

good idea to get them out,but getting them rewound and reinstalled is a giant pain in the ass.
when you go to put it back together you need to put a screw-jack between the coils while you tighten the screws, otherwise they won't pull tight enough to the case and the armature will rub against them.
is the starter made by Lucas?

if so,it might be easier to find another Lucas starter with similar sized field coils and install them in the case you have.
    better yet,since this is a hot rod forum,get rid of the weak-ass MG engine and install a Buick/Rover 215 cid V-8 :D

I have a friend who is a wiz with old starters. He has repaired them for 30 years. If nothing works out, send it to me and I'll have him repair it. (he does do it for a living still, so he does charge to do it). He is really cheap though. Rebuilt the starter for my 54 Chevy with a new drive unit for $60.
