Ok,this may not be important to any of you guys, and I never really gave a shit about it before to.But How does someone get a hotrod in a car magazine,I would kill for the chance to just have it happen once,I got a great looking hotrod, and I'm told,a really good story to.So any ideas.Anyone know anybody?I know, this may be a really lame ass post.It may only be my opinion, but I think this car should be in some magazine.

have your car where the magazine guys are taking pics, and do something to get their attention. It works for me. my avatar is a scan of my car in hot rod magazine.

Just get acquainted with luminaries like Boyd Coddington and the rest is history! Just kidding! Seriously, just attend the "big" events such as any one of the Nationals ( NSRA, NHRA, Goodguys, Magazine "Power" Tours, etc; ) and if you've got what they're looking for, you're a candidate! Good Luck! I still prefer the "thumbs up", "highfives" and "Would you give my kid a ride in your car?" etc; But I can't blame a guy for receiving credit for something he's done well!

  4. That works.

or just try and make friends with a magazine dude, there are plenty here on the HAMB, or all of the above.

Now post us some pics of the little gem, recognition on the HAMB is worth way more than any magazine article. Hell we're either your greatest advocates or your worse critics.

Make it stand out. There are thousands of cars, each one unique in its own way. When they pull into a grocery store parking lot, they are super stars. When they pull into a car show with a thousand other "super stars," they have to be really special to catch a magazine's eyes.

If you are wanting a feature, and the story is just unbelieveable email JimA :D :D:D. If you are wanting to be included in show coverage, well that's a little easier, but not simple. Your car is really nice, but it doesn't scream out "take a third look"... If the story is wild and crazy, a little display sign can be helpful. I've stopped at more than a few "average" cars to read the signs and left with a deeper appreciation of the vehicle.

  6. photoshop request...

  7. Just kidding, but they usually do a "get your car in our mag" article about once a year.

Get to know, Spike, known on the HAMB as hotrodphotos.......he contributes articles and pictures to several magazines.......he's a Douchebag, but I like him!!

He got my Deuce 3w into a 3 page spread in Traditional Rod & Kulture...issue #5

He's actually a good guy and a hell of a photographer!

You might just try sending some pics to the "readers rides" section of a couple of mags. It's a start.

Build something cool or really gay. Either tends to garner magazine attention

Get it muddy as hell. Nobody looked twice at my hot rod until I got it muddy as hell. It showed up in 4 magazines last year. :D

magazines (Hot Rod, Car Craft) mention that they shoot most of their features at bigger shows. Just keep it in the public eye... if they see it and like it... they might shoot it.

Car Craft is always looking for burn out shots....dump a little bleach, powerbrake until it looks like cotton, release the brake and snap away.

Hire a hottie with large hooters, that will get their attention. Then after they wipe the sweat off their foreheads, mention your ride.

Right place, right time. DO NOT bother the magazine people. Don't kiss their ass. Don't whine about getting your car photographed.

The more someone bugs me, the less likely their car will get in.

  19. Post a request for the magazine guys asking what kind of photo format they want.
Slides, prints, type film or digital with a quality digital camera.

If digital they'll want a first generation - big - file of photo's.
2nd generation and down won't cut it according to my source.

Write up a good tech sheet.
Include brands, duration of cam, gearing, tire size, the whole magilla.

Take photo's with a somewhat neutral background.
Doesn't hurt to have the car in a nice park or other classy background area, but be careful with what shows up behind the car.

It would help to get some shots from slightly different angles than seen in most hot rod mags.
Lay on the ground, shoot up etc.

Imo, it wouldn't hurt to get the car up on a rack and take some chassis shots.
Builders always want to see that area and it's one the mags skip due to lack of facilities and/or time.

Got any novel stuff on your car?
Like home-made top irons or similar?
Point those out and shoot some pics.

They'll want some photos that are close to one another in angle shot etc., but move forward and backward and supply them with plenty to choose from.

Probably the most important part, good, clear focus.

Write a little bit about the car and yourself as well as how the build went.

You stand as good a chance as most if you can present the right package.
Magazines are usually looking for material and they fairly consume it.
Once this months mag is put to bed, they can leave work, have a cold beer or two and next day start the struggle all over again....

You have to be at national or very well known cars shows.
I have had four cars in magazines. Cover and features.
    Why?
    Don't ask me!
    I was just there.
Be there, have a nice car.
Don't be all upety when your questioned on your car.
    That turns people off.

Thanks guys,I appreciate all the advise.I have already had small pictures of the car in 3 magazines, and that was last year, the first year out for the car,but a feature would be the balls. And I am going to the NSRA Nats East in York PA,so the car will be seen again.

Bake cookies and have a tupperware container full on the front seat.
Seems to always draw the mag photographer types.:D

You guys think I'm kidding? Funny, quick story. Last Friday we pull into the GG Hershey show in Roadstar's roadster and parked next to the Gennie Shifter display. I had baked Rudy's son Race a huge ziplock bag of cookies. (He works for Gennie Shifter and we were seeing him for the first time in about 5 months) Anyway. literly less then 5 MINUTES after giving Race his bag of cookies KIRK! and Brandon (both GG photographers) walked up!;) True story:D

It's true... I can smell a bag of those cookies for a mile. It's like using bait. Fill the seat with cookies and a sign that says "for photographer types only," and then get out of the way and don't ask any questions or make a lot of noise. A red head with a D-cup would be a plus. :D

First get a truck and an airconditioned car hauler....also get an illegal immigrant to do the polishing.....power park at all the big events.....sit in your lawn chair.....and wait. Or do what I do...never stop driving long enough for anybody to get a picture, and if they do happen to get ya in their viewfinder, charge them for the rights to publish the pics....
