Hi, to every body this message board is unbelievable. I need some advice. I haven't been able to keep new panels from rusting, just my hands start the process. How do I reverse it and keep it from rusting. I see many bare bodies on this message board (cars I mean) bodies with no paint on them while being worked on. How are they kept that way.
I am using Gibbs Brand Penetrant and am pleased with the results: Best price I could find on Gibbs was at http://threepeaksproducts.com/products/gibbslube/ Here is another source for Gibbs that you will see here on the HAMB alot http://www.roadsters.com/gibbs/ Here are some other ides: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=502672&highlight=bare
i use mineral spirits and oil mixed 1:1- this is the cheapest and a good lubricant if you need to work the panel as far as any metal shaping- the mineral spirits cleans the panel a little too when you wipe it down. atf is also good, use anything as long as its not silicone based i 1st used oil and kerosene but it doesn't smell the best but works just as well
I saw a thread yesterday about this same type of thing and Gibbs was the most used and highest rated item that people use for this type of thing. I din't really know what Gibbs is or where to get it, so this information might help me out too.
you will want to get the oils from your skin off the metal as soon as possible. Some people (me included) just cause metal to rust. if you touch the bare metal clean it wit mineral spirits, or other cleaner, and oil it with your chosen protection.
Another Gibbs fan here in NZ. Don't put it straight on the metal. Put it on a rag then rub on the metal. It will go twice as far doing that.
Captain Lee"s from Master Series will desolve any surface rust and leave a coating of zinc chromate,,,,Have body parts in storage for years,,,,no rust,,,,about $30 a gallon,,,,you will not be dissapointed...
