I graduate from TSTC (Texas State technical college) with my associate’s degree in Auto Body and Refinishing next semester. I want to eventually work for a custom car/truck magazine. What steps should I take to attain this goal? After I graduate from TSTC I want to go on to get my bachelors, but what in? Journalism/Photography? I know some cats on here are bound to work for a magazine or know someone who does, so help!

    Thanks guys,

    Casey

Exactly. You need to become a magine fluffer and eventually, if you have the throat for it, you move your way up...That is how Houston did it...and she eventually smashed 500 guys in a row.

That IS talent...and a dream job for some.

  4. Whenever you do something to your ride make a tech article out of it. Then submit it here and send it to a magazine. Persistance pays off.
Well thats what I would do, but I have bad knees and don't like sausage. :D

I know at least 10 journalism majors with BAs who never worked in publishing. Concentrate on being a fantastic photographer with decent writing skills, the editors will re-write it anyway. Most mag guys are more technical, have multiple degrees in other fields and just happen to live in so-cal.

get an internship at a low level publisher, work your way up, move to cali.
I have a degree in print management and in commercial graphics and business administration, and that barely got my foot in the door. they want creativity, a WOW resume and a portfolio to back it up.

It is really hard getting in.

  6. And remember, you might have to start out on a magazine that isnt your bag. Grey Baskerville starrted writing for Sunset Magazine as his first job. I know RF REALLY wants to move over to The Poodle Journal:D

DO NOT go to work for Primedia!

All seriousness aside...most mags want to see what you can do, first...show them great photography, show them you can write an article or story, show them you have an endless supply of story ideas, photography ideas, show them you know your way around computer programs, especially helpful would be programs that allow you to lay out pages...

You'll probably have to send in stuff gratis for a while, until the current editors get a feel for what you're capable of...

That way, you can add mag titles/names to your resume...and you'll need one...

I had a offer a few years back to Art Direct for a major bike rag .... Would have been a kick, but I couldn't afford the pay cut .....
