I'm removing the glass from my 1946 Ford Fordor for paint. Never did this before , door glass and glass behind rear door is out and I know how to do the windscreen but I don't know how to get the rear glass out. Can I remove the rear window without cutting te rubber gasket or do I just have to cut the rubber ?
It is possible to remove the glass without cutting the rubber, but it is difficult because the old rubber has hardened over the years. I have used a large flat blade screw driver to get under the rubber on the inside and slowly pry it up and towards the outside. Work slowly around the outside perimeter. Be very careful as it is easy to break the glass. Probably the best method is to just cut the rubber lip off on the inside. You will probably want to replace all these weatherstrips anyway as they are also hard to reinstall after new paint is done. There are a number of old Ford parts houses that can provide replacements.
Cut the rubber - for sure if it's the original - price a new gasket vrs a new curved back glass if you crack/break it trying to remove it with the gasket.
