That truck will need the weight to ride better and you could just leave the pistons and rods out of it and just use the ends of the crank to make it look complete,no need for the cam and valves too.

Flathead blocks are heavy, trust me I know. I've only recently had an umbilical hernia fixed that I gave myself lifting a flathead short block ***embly into the boot of my Willys by myself in about 1967.

To lighten it, obviously you'd remove crank, rods, cam, valves etc, then the basic bare block would be liftable on your own. (Probably) To lighten it further how about taking a sledgehammer to the bearing webs, smash them out and see what you can hit next, bottom of the barrels perhaps? You should be able to bust out a fair bit of the internals without breaking into the surface of the block, and if you do, just glue it back in and paint over it!

As far as coffee tables go, a friend of mine has one made from a bare Boss 302 block, painted Ford blue, with a gl*** top held on with chrome rods.

    Cheers, Glen.

  5. Thanks for the (sensible & polite) responses! The old, cracked flathead block is still sitting on the engine stand. All that I had gotten from the guy was the bare block itself and 2 cylinder heads, so there wasn't much more that I could merely unbolt to save weight. On a positive note though, I traded some "stuff" to a friend of mine for an aluminum Fenton dual carb manifold for the flathead, and for now just the manifold is riding along (bolted down to the bed). That little 3.9 V6 needs all the help that it can get, and I don't want to carry around 200# if I don't have to.

The truck is about 90% done, but I am politely refusing to get the plates registered to it until it is DONE the way that I want it. I've taken it for some runs around the block and it's doing fine. I still have to do the final installations on the interior, get the heater and AC working (it's a driver, and I'm married to a very tolerant woman but I try to accommodate her requests for easy things like AC. AND AC is essential for a driver to keep the windows clear when it's raining.). I'll do a build thread soon.

Thanks again! I LIKE the idea for turning it into a coffee table though!!!

Score it with a cut-off wheel and hit it with a 3lb sledge.
