You're right...so sorry...only pure genius writes for any magazine. FWIW I can recall some of the commentary from back then and it was an idea and an opinion. The latest "hate" came around in the last 8-10 years and was started by whom I said. I like the car. I like that he posted what's up with it. I like how passionate some are on the subject regardless of how ill-informed some of that passion was cultivated. Here's a drink for all ya SBC haters:

hell,, its more infantile than that!

how many times does this have to get beat to death?

    WGAF what it is.....SBC BBC..TFC.IBTC..RB.BRB..GTFOMP

you have to ask your self one question before you respond to this thread..

    1. Is it yours?
    2. Is it your Money?
    3. if the answer to #1 or 2 or both are no, than STFU!

its his or his customers car and they can do what ever floats their boat.

now..returning you to your regularly scheduled****** fest!..

Perfectly said. If you don't want a SBC because everyone else has one then your being trendy. Don't worry about what others are doing.....just do your own thing.

Ok, let me get this right. You are saying the likes of Leroy "Tex" Smith, the late Frank Oddo, The late Tom Medley, Pat "Too Tall" Ganahl, The late Gray Baskerville, Spence Murray, Bud Lang, Jay Storer, Jim "Jake" Jacobs, John Thawley, Pat Brollier, Bob Hegge, the late Tom Senter, Andy Southard Jr., Bud Lowrey, Bud Bryan, Jim Babb, and others that don't come to mind, wrote fluff pieces and do not deserve respect? These guys wrote about everything from scratch building Model T fenders, to preparing a Chrysler Hemi for a 200 mph Bonneville attempt. If you want traditional, research the build of Bud Bryan's '29 Ford roadster that was covered in the pages of R&C. I could go on for many pages about the great writing and photography contained in R&C of the period, but I will only suggest you hit the swap meets, purchase these old issues of this rodding icon, and see it for yourself.
Also, if you are trying to tell me that Ford Motorsport and Ford Racing are the only ones promoting sales of crate engines and parts thereof, you are the one drinkin' the Kool-Aid. Chevrolet and Mopar do exactly the same thing...and rightly so. After all, they are in business to sell autos and auto parts.
I'm not saying I hate anybody or anything...just tired of seeing (as previously stated), Chevrolet engines in Ford Products. As a Chevy guy, how would you like to look at a row of Tri-Fives powered by Ford engines.
Also, despite your opinion on the subject, the Ford in a Ford movement WAS started in the pages of R&C, with John Thawley being the originator of the series. If you don't believe me, you should be able to look it up for yourself, being you are the GENIUS.

Well, vertible 59...here's the solution to that problem of yours : IF you open a thread, and it shows a Chevy engine going into a Ford (or already in one), cuz it's not ever going to stop...simply close it...!!!

It'll save you a lot of typing, headaches, heartache and just plain cussing...and it'll save those of us that don't care one way or the other a lot of reading.

you forgot Bud Lang... and the last time I talked to Tom Medley he was still alive and kicking. I hope you don't know more than I do. I worked on projects for most of these guys and I really can't say any of them ever shared your line of thinking. The fact is when engine swaps became popular, Chevy was much more user friendly and every aftermarket supplier of the day had engine mounts, headers, etc., etc. and there was nothing for aftermarket Ford.
I was also around when R&C got real hot on go-karts, model cars, slot cars, dune buggys and a slew of other fads that came and went. Just some food for thought.
    Sorry, just the facts...

I hope I did receive some misinformation about Tom Medley...what a great traditional automotive writer! And Bud Lang was mentioned...no way I would leave him out.
My statements about the R&C staff wasn't directed at the Ford in a Ford debate directly, even though John Thawley DID start a series of articles on the subject in '70 or so. His were the first I ever saw on the subject, dealing with the Ford smallblock in an early Ford chassis. There may have been others, but from what I can see, Thawley and R&C were the first with a series on the subject. The post I was responding to, seemed to undermine the abilities of those writers and photographers I listed. I do not care who you are, that is unacceptable to me. I have the geratest respect for those men and for the body of work they created...no matter what the subject. Therefore, I think you missed the point of my post.

First off all, I would never close someone's thread even if I knew how. I was stating fact in what I said about the R&C staff, as best as I knew how. Even if you have no respect for automotive writers, I do, and your arrogant, disrespectful attitude will not change that. I don't have a problem...all my Fords are Ford powered, and nothing you say will ever change that.
Actually, you missed the point of everything I had to say...YOUR problem, not mine!

Only Ryan can close a thread, you CANNOT...!!! Don't ever think you have the power to do that...

No, I didn't miss any of it, I ignored it...but just so we're clear here, let me reiterate, you said : " I'm... just tired of seeing (as previously stated), Chevrolet engines in Ford Products." you missed my point about "closing it"...when you clik off a thread, it closes, right...??? It's really that simple...open it, close it if it's going to cause you so much anguish...

Well, you guys have been my entertainment for the afternoon.

Tumbleweed, they might have been more friendly if you had put a 302 Ford in it even though it would probably have taken twice the work.

I've owned a lot of different vehicles and engines in the past 46 years of driving and owning cars. One flathead that I promptly cracked the block on, a strong 322 Buick and many 350R'se in different Old's, Sevilles and the 51 Merc for 100K. I also have had my quota of small block chevs and straight six chevs.

I just bought a little 39/42 flathead out of a wind machine and when I am done it will no doubt be the most expensive engine I have ever built or owned. I'll have several thousand in it instead of several hundred for a rebuild on a 350 Chev and when I'm done I'll just have another H.A.M.B. bellybutton flathead with finned alunimum heads, two or three strombergs and a the requesit number of small round chrome air cleaners. If I load it up and head for Texas (I have family in the Austin area) for the roundup I can park it in a row of 50 other just like it aluminum headed multi carb flatheads with some even painted the same color.

I've got a 56 Desoto Hemi in the shed that will cost a couple of weeks pay just to do a rering and valve job on if the cylinders will hone out. Another 400 for an adapter to hook a torqueflite to it although I have a stick over setup for it now.

Some of you guys act like everyone has a*****pot load of money to spend on their cars and the ones the most vocal can't seem to understand why a guy puts in a 1500.00 engine instead of spending five or six k on an older engine that may have to have parts custom made for it.

If you are yelling put an early Cad or olds or Hemi in it. Sit down and price out what it really costs to rebuild one right. Find out how easy it is to get a 390 Cad waterpump or fuel pump on Saturday afternoon on the side of I 84 In far gone Idaho or some other place off the path.
And just maybe that flathead will get a more interesting home if it is rebuildable and gets rebuilt. One mans cast offs are another mans hotrod goodies.

    Hahaha! :D

I get this same***** from a couple of the guys in our club. I'm all for running whatever you like, as long as you can keep up - and I know it can be done - it just takes a little more commitment and know-how.

The guys I know who usually spout the most 'traditional'***** are the same ones who have to drive their Saturns or Hondas to cruise ins / shows cause their flathead/hemi/whatever powered stuff ain't running right.

Like my buddy Rick says, that's why there are 64 colors in a box of crayons - everyone likes something different. It's all good with me, as long as it's roadworthy.

Gee Skwurl you sound just like that other magpie on here-all steel original 33 with all ford power plant and drive trane is far from 80's. The wheels are for rolling and soon as the steelies get in those will go back on the other rod. Some of you guys are total whinners and evidently not capable of any imagination. some of you will always be a follower and not a leader.Have a nice day I have some wheels to polish!

  28. Yup, 50 other flat motored cars.
There is not a single person alive who honestly would rather walk down a line of 50 Hot Rods all powered by SBC's as opposed to the flat motor.
My vote was to keep the flattie in there or if you have to change go for a Nailhead, hemi, caddy etc....
Carry spares, maintain your car, no problem. Hell my old daily driver had the same flat motor in it un-rebuilt that it had in the 50s. I just cared for it.
Cost is all relative. I'm pretty poor but I am scraping all my money together to run something different (Here anyway) Pot noodles are fine for food, Id ratrher spend my money on my car.
Hell, I have more invested in porting the heads on my Nailhead than I have in other possesions!
I would also rather walk, or use my daily driver (Falcon) to get around in and even go to events as I save the dollars to do something right. Why sell out to the SBC just to say you drive a hot rod?

So all the youth the spews this***** was inspired by these same greats from 3+ decades ago. Got it. Now it does indeed take Einstien-esque genius to roll MY personal opinion on the topic into a disregard for the likes of Medley and Baskerville, as well as tradition. My goodness your knickers are in a twist. Tradition? I don't know 'bout you kid but I live it. It's not tradition for me. It's my everyday life. Chevy guy? Where in heavens name did you get that idea? Those who know me best would say I'm a Packard guy.
