  1. Well, I dont like the term RAT ROD. I like the term traditional rod?

I prefer traditional thirties to forties styled rods. Like the ones you read about in Hop Up and that Mike Bishop and Vern Tardel are in to.

But then I have seen some well proportioned chanelled cars too. What I dont like is thrown together junkers that people call hot rods! I like them to look old and traditional but not unsafe!

A neat traditional roadster would be Squeak Bell's roadster. I particularly enjoy the Choppers of Burbank cars for the period perfect looks and then I totally admire Jimmy Shine's Frankenshine. I think the Mike Bishop roadster is just sooooooooo cool and the restoration of historic hot rods is great for future generations!

  6. Depends on the body style.....(stance verses body proportions)

    eg a 28 roadster = higboy
    a 28 coupe = channel

    They are my prefferences

Similarly, some colors are better on some body styles than others

At the end of the day, back to basics, Stance, Wheels, Colour are the 'first impression' features which set the 'tone' of a car. The details are where the 'label' comes in.......my 2c

    Cheers,

I voted 'hiboy', but my full answer would agree with DONZIE - channeled is OK if done right. Lower is not always better - the look has to 'floooow'.

Hiboys are easier to do right.

Sam you *******... I answer neither... I like 50 styled channel jobs. Not billet proof style. Nuthin' against modern style patina... but the channel jobs are too low for my tastes. I am one that apreciates about a 6 to 7 inch channel. I do like highboys and full fenders as well. My favorites are the channels though. Not nessessarily east coast style. But channeled.

I like the look of a channeled car. I also like to take quick trips (8 hour) in my roadster. The comfort level would drop a bunch in my car, if it was channeled..

my favorite are when ***S decide to ,Make FENDERLESS cars out of cars that SHOULD NEVER not have FENDERS..
and the COOL look of the TIRES above the REAR WINDOWS on "A"SEDANS".....

NOTHING like a 39 ford car with MODEL a LIGHT STANDS I like the FIREWALL look...

My MOST DEFINATE favorite is watching 2 BIT hacks build 400 horsepower ENGINES and then BUILD an "A" FRAME and a KICK, with a 110 welder, without the USE of COMMON GUSSETS...

PRO STYLE is the BEST when it comes to.
    BUILDING RAT RODS......

I like the 90 degree rear kicks,
    they look good........

and 10 inch channels.. are SWEET...

    I HATE THE WORLD

  18. Hahahaha!!
Using the term RAT ROD was kind of tongue in cheek guys... I'm actually trying to not get all bent about people calling my car a RAT ROD, so many people call my car a RAT ROD... it's usually the general public or the people that aren't "in the know"...

And Grimlock... you likie this car with a "5" on the door? What about you 4ever4?

Hence the "quotes" . . . I agree with you though . and for what it's worth I like channeled cars if they are channeled the frame hight , and I like cars on top of the frame with zee'd and kicked up frames , etc . . . I dont really like the so-cal body on the ground hot rod look . I dont think hot rods should be that low .

  20. Mee too Mike. I like channeled cars like the one pictured here. (except its grille shell could stand to be lowered an inch or two) Just to the bottom of the frame, thank you. The ground s****ing ones aren't my style... pictures of a monkey and a football come to mind . [IMG] It's just when the driver looks like he's sitting on top of the car instead of in it... things take on a cartoon flavor. I guess for me, aesthetics take presidence over shock value... in other words, I'd rather make the car look good instead of making it something that people will gawk at and say "damn that is low"... knowhatI'msayin'??

  21. Hey Sam the bottom line is too many people have built pieces of **** that look similar to your hotrod. And thats what makes the ones that are actually well built with a unfinished flavor get lumped into the same catagory.

Hope that makes sence. And as far as you orig**** question, I stoped liking the "STYLE" when it came down to who could build the biggist piece of **** and actually make it go down the road.

I couldn't have said it better myself!

So why do some guys think it is cool to drive a piece of ****?

The ones that think it's cool to drive an ultimate **** pile aren't typically "hot rodders", in many cases. Hot rodders generally seek to modify their vehicles to IMPROVE their form or function...or both. The Rockabilly Butchers just seek to elevate their status by risking life and limb on the roads in their bombs....as they stand around gloating over their miraculous survival each time they arrive somewhere in tact! Funny to see...until you realize that you're on the same road with them going home!

Oh wait a minute...****!!! I'm starting to sound like ***US!!! [IMG]

    AAAAAHHHGGHHH!! [IMG]

You can build Gay Clown Car Death Rods that are still roadworthy for the sake of being different...and I actually LIKE seeing some of them...but to try and cheat death in something that Super Dave would think twice about driving just for the sake of Rockabilly Machismo is REALLY gay!!

But, on the flip side...hot rods really aren't truly cool unless they are at least a LITTLE BIT dangerous...500 horsepower in a t-bucket is a loose cannon in a very COOL way...but 36 horsepower in a cobbled up Death Heap is risky in a SAD sort of way!!

Real rodders aint the problem...it's the Suicidal Scenesters you gotta watch! [IMG]

good question.. ignorance of how things should work would play a major roll... youth, and testoserone.

trying to make sense of something as gay as a hoopty rod is beyond me.

    What Sam said PLUS!
(To the "new guys", Sam's a very aware and intelligent guy, listen to him!)

I like channeled cars like the one SAMIYAM pictured too, and I agree that its grille shell must be lowered as much as the channel was or it looks out of sync, out of proportion, and spoils the lines of the car.
That is, unless it is a pure race car and not a street rod in any way, then if the high radiator makes it go faster then it doesn't matter. because for a race car, performance is everything.
Channels should definitely only go to the bottom of the frame.
The ones with ground s****ing sheet metal and the frame still sitting high inside them are just plain weird.
Pictures of two monkeys ****ing the same football definitely do come to mind.
Those things only belong on a Day-Glo airbrushed Roth shirt.
If you want the look of a body down there fabricate a full belly pan for it, or "Z" or curve the frame down there the way rogue did th one he's building.
I guess for me, aesthetics and usability take precedence over shock value...
A hotrod should look good, handle well, and ride good over any bad roads around without having to slow to a crawl, instead of being something that people will gawk at and say "damn that is low"...
They aren't a far step from a motorized "PacMan" in my way of thinking.

    I don't think it's about whether a car's channeled or not.
It comes down to how the whole concept of the car is accomplished.

Some cars need to be channeled, some cars look ugly channeled. They could be the same car, channeled the same ammount but the end result may be different. It's about the build up like Germ says.

And conversly, if the cars ****ed up when finnished you can't just blame it on the channel or chop etc. It's the whole package.

Generally I don't like channeled cars but that's because I think it's hard to come up with a nice finished product when you change the style that much. But the Colegiate Coupe does it for me...
