  1. Mother ****er! This one went outa the park. I'm gonna go with a tweener, on top o tha frame but sectioned, so to appear as channeled, but still a highboy. can you smoke that out of a pipe? I do gotta say I like a channel the height of the frame with reversed eyes on the springs with a bit o step in the rear. Regular tire in front, one size up in back. Minimum 40hp,with a tail wind! 2. Dammit. I keep telling people my car is a total piece of unsafe **** and I need to move on. Nobody ever listens or agrees with me except Mud. You think I'm kidding? YOU drive it... Here's the keys...

I do realize it's not a channeled hotrod or a high boy... and it's not a 4-door 64 Galaxie but you get the point?

hiboy vs channeled, just good proportions...

as long as you can drive it with a flat tire,
    maybe 2
and you don't smash your radiator,
    or oil pan
    (not pokin at you framedragger)

and you can drive it down dirt berms,
between the highway (the cop turnaqrounds)

    and in dusty crop fields,
    or over curbs...

    that is the coolest.

I may be wrong, but I think Drewfus' point is that the truck is not channeled,

    the frame is stepped.

I'm partial to unchanneled hot rods because I favor long-term, daily driving -- treating your hot rod like a real car rather than a fashion statement.

That doesn't mean I don't appreciate and admire excellent efforts like Rogue's *****in' little truck, and of course Shine's closed-cab model.

But when it comes down to such adventures as running 80-plus mph across Nevada in the wee small hours of the morning, with abrupt four-inch pavement drops and rises in the dozens of resurfacing zones, there's something re***uring about having more than a couple of inches of suspension travel.

That couple of inches of suspension travel also translates to driving in the world closer to home as well, and I for one don't want to drive my hot rods like they were fragile, incompetant art cars. A car that requires that sort of pampering isn't a hot rod in my book of definitions.

Just the opinion of an old greybeard . . .

  9. First step is not to build a "hoopty rod". You know, flat black primer with flames, a red frame, with a 35 sedan body and no fenders.

If you are using an ugly frame, it needs to be channeled. I don't care how much, as long as I don't see a bunch of **** hanging underneith it. You gotta channel a model A frame. They are really ugly. Deuce rails on the other hand, are the most beutiful thing on the planet, and don't need to be channeled.

Seems to me that back in the day, east coast rides were usually really low and channeled, without a top chop. This made them look a little hokey to me. west coast and midwest rides seemed to have a better proportion to them, with a chop and channel to them. An old timer gave me the figure of 4" and 4" for the perfect proportions on a model A.

I don't care how low it is, if it looks right. A full fendered car can be a lot higher than a fenderless car, and still look spot on. Dave

I will say this: I like all cars to be low. Hotrods- channeled the width of the framerail is cool, z'd frames are cool to. But My 34 pickemup is an honest to goodness HIGHBOY! No fenders and ON TOP of henry ford 34 frame. Not really all that high, but not s****ing by any stretch.

My view is, **** All these cars coming out that are rediculously low. IT Aint a hotrod if you have to baby it everywhere you go. I know of a car being built right now that will never make it though a parking lot, much less down the hightway at 60+.****ING USELESS. they look kinda cool sometimes, but I'll bet they are a huge headache to drive. **** 'Em. Okay let me have it. -J.

I prefer them low, channeled or even s****ing.

I think people are confusing comfort level with driveability. Just because a car s****es once in a while doesn't mean it's not driveable. That's a personal preference.

Same goes for a lot of things on a car that people would say are unstreetable, camshafts, skinny front runners, excessive gears, torque converters, drum front brakes, bias ply tires.

I'll put up with a lot for speed or the right stance. I don't expect a hot rod to drive like a new Cadillac. I don't mind if the engine has to run at 3000 at 75mph as long as it can run some numbers. I'd rather have a car that put the HOT back into Hot Rod then a car that my dad could/would drive. Granted I'm young so I'll put up with a lot. But I know of at least one car that s****es on every speed bump, that gets driven across the country with no creature comforts.

  13. I refer to them as traditional rods as well.

I like em' down low and Z'd a lot. When you're a bigger guy channeling can make things mighty uncomfortable. I also like some rods on top if they don't have too much rake.

Ya gotta' wack at least 3 inches out of the top no matter what.

  14. Ok, here's a little hint about my use of the term RAT ROD...

Look up the term disequalibrium... that's where some of you went with your discontent with my (intentional) use of the term RAT ROD.

  18. Squirt some nice paint on there and you'll have a nice custom. Is it a rod? NO.

mike does that grey beard mean your getting old?
nothing wakes you faster driving in the wee hours than a little pavement bashing and sparks flying and your good for another 100 miles LOL

or what can top the thrill of running 80+ and have someone pull out of a driveway and you not knowing which way the car going to swerve when you touch the brakes (if you even have them) yeah the thrill of a fine machine keeps you young [IMG]

  24. I'm pretty big so I would have to say on the rails, because you reach a certian point when you channel them so severly where they are not useful for anything but a show car (if there are rat rod show cars) because they can't take normal road conditions like speed bumps, pot holes, curbs, back lanes and the like without getting stuck or seroiusly damaging your car. Besides when you get that low all you would do is **** the exhaust of every truck or SUV infront of you!
