get on the HAMB and find a local that has a place to park your car - most of us would be glad to help -- I have a visitor in my shop as we speak - jaxx

The guys who use a gun to protect a car always seem to assume they'll be awakened by the thief. Most cars seem to be taken with the owner sound asleep or out of town. Away from his gun.

Also, what if you missed and the crook has a gun? Are you willing to risk a shoot out at your home? And you know all that activity has caused your family and neighbors to possibly wander in the line of fire. Will they know to "duck", while you fend off intruders?

I own a gun and a license. Part of owning one is being able to use it properly, knowing when to use it and knowing where to use it. I'm not saying don't do it, but at least weigh logical thinking.

If I was staying at a hotel and REALLY cared about my car, I'd go to the local police and ask if they had an off duty officer who wanted to make some money for a night of security. Depending on the location, it would probably be reasonable.

Hey there, arkracing. I check the laws concerning carrying firearms in any state I will be entering, but I will never visit ANY state that doesn't trust me to provide my own protection for me and my family, including your state. P.S. I am not a tough guy, but I do have common sense.

Now watch out with the dreaded comments about the 305 & 350, oldcarmike. You and Diablo are way, way, way outnumbered in the Hinterland. After sleeping in his backseat, Diablo will be too sore to get out of his car, and you will be just too depressed to do anything because you are from an "annoying" place. I love that.

Lock the doors, put a cover on it, go to sleep. You do have adequate theft insurance, right?

ROLLBACKS are the most dangerous........as has already been stated here,.

When I travel I will park sideward in a parking spot taking up two spaces....then Modern Iron will park next to me.......if I see someone pulling in....I'll ask if they can park next to me .....with a modern car at each end it is almost impossible to steal the car. They could still jack up the car & put casters under the wheels.....

I tape a note to the inside of my window stating that I'm parking this way to prevent theft. I even go so far as to say..."You are welcome to block me in"..... This helps reduce any anger that might result.

If you can't park sideward, at least back into your parking spot....if a rollback takes you, the rear wheels will screech when they drag it forward.

If you park front against the curb, a rollback can get you in 3 minutes.

You may be a little inconvenienced....because you have to wait for the cars to leave before you can move your car....but the peace of mind is priceless.

Get insurance for the whole replacement value comes to mind. I had one car where the steering wheel was removable and I disconnected the battery which was in the trunk. All others, good insurance.

Its simple to install an anti theft switch. I have one on mine and will bet no one could find it.

Wow, I haven't read through this whole thing, but I guess it just never occurred to me to worry quite this much. See, my avatar Plymouth and I used to travel with my business up in Washington state and stay in hotels for a good 3 1/2 months out of every year. I have parked it everywhere you could imagine and never really had to worry about it too much. I did always go out of my way in most cases to stay in traditional Motels where I could park it out side my door, though.

The only time I have ever been worried about it in a parking lot is when on a trip to LARS with ElPolacko and his green truck, we were forced to stay in a new Holiday Inn in down town San Bernardino for one night. The Hotel was brand new and very nice, but the neighborhood it was in was WAY WAY sketchy! We pulled the coil wire off of both and parked in the farthest corner from the streets and all was well.

I've spend a lot of time touring around, many nights with the Model A outside the motel door. We've never had any issues in Canada or the US, maybe just lucky (or no one wants the car). We like cruising the two lanes and make a real effort to avoid big cities. I know stuff gets stolen but I sure hope the fear of that happening doesn't stop people from driving their vehicles.

I re-purposed the original horn ring on my 50 Chevy; so that it grounds out a second starter relay. That made it so you have to push the horn (no the horns are not connected) to crank the engine. But what thief is going to push the horn while they're trying to steal your car.
I also put one of those universal horn buttons on the dash, which is connected too two 6 volt horns on a 12 volt system; talk about loud. In the center of the black button with white paint I wrote IGN.

People just have to remember, if someone REALLY wants what you've got, they'll figure out a way to get it. All the hidden stuff in the world won't stop a PROFESSIONAL car thief. The average kid or guy out for a quick car, isn't looking for a hot rod. He's looking for an Impala. Nothing, short of someone physically watching your vehicle, is fool proof.

A lot of people love boasting about their home security systems too. It's amazing. It's like they walk around with a shirt that says, "Hey! Here's where the switches are for my security system!"

    LOL.

Well if you want to come up to Canada from Kentucky, find my car in a city with 350,000 people; then hang around until you find it alone in a parking lot; you might just deserve to have the car with that amount if effort. LOL
With the car having a Gen III ECM (computer) to run the fuel injection; there hundreds of ways I can disable the car with just a push of a button on the key fob.
Tell the obvious but keep the important stuff to my/yourself.
First time I got laughed at or called out here; now I feel like one of the bunch. LOL

I am paranoid, so I have multiple tactics on my car to deter theft. First I have an alrm system, with motion/shock sensor. Then I have a battery cutoff switch, with removeable key. (the alarm is tapped ahead of the battery switch!) Then I have a fuel pump shut off switch also. Hopefully all these together will deter a crook from driving, or towing the car while I'm asleep.

    LOL, exactly...

I have a couple that haven't been mentioned, but I really don't want to mention them... I guarantee that one of them couldn't be found or bypassed, they would have to open the hood and start the truck from the engine bay, and that will soon be locked down as well.

Paranoid? Maybe a bit, but I've witnessed a couple of would-be thieves running from my truck in the past as soon as they saw me coming.

Car covers come off pretty easy and it usually doesn't take too much imagination to figure out what is under them. It also gives the crook a nice place to hide while he is dismantling your interior or hotwiring the car.

I do three things...the wire to the starter is interupted with a switch, slows down the goon who wants to bust out the ignition, the switch is right out where you can see it, second, I try to stay over in small towns with a mom and pop place, last, I park right outside my ground floor room, the truck is five feet from the door. After owning harley davidsons most of my adult life, rule number one comes into play, if you can't see it, don't park it, that includes restaurants, only park where there's a window beside your seat looking out at your pride and joy. I have had the pleasure of walking outside and kicking the crap out of a "fellow" who wanted my bike more than me, he didn't even see me coming.

I have driven cross country a time or two and in a roadster, never had a problem and leave the key in it a lot. Things have change a lot though after everyone brags about how much they have in their ride the bad guys see a profit. Thanks Barrett-Jackson and Meacum.

Marking your stuff with these might help with recovery, too. http://www.copdots.com/

How about if I use valet parking at the Ritz-Carlton?
