I am pretty sure that you have to drop it out with the steering box... That's why there is that big section of floor that unbolts.

i tryed that. so that means in the old days if they had to replace a steering box they had to pull it as a complete unit?

i also tried to twist it and pull on it at the same time. nothing.

Why not just take the box with it? isn't it just a few bolts on the side of the frame?

then i gotta drop the pit man arm and start getting into the suspension. i'm at work working on it i don't think they would really want me start tearing it apart. i'm looking for an easier solution. if not i'll have to tow it home and really get into it.

It's not that bad. I dropped my out and replaced the whole unit in like an hour and a half. Flying blind most of the way. Three bolts on the steering box and then the pitman arm. Sounds like you already have everything else loose. If you have a column shift it comes off the column with just a couple bolts also.

at a junkyard once we didn't have the tools to take it out the 'right' way...
and the steering wheel would NOT come off...

    So we improvised...

we took a pair of vice grips or channel locks, can't remember which,
and starting at an existing hole in the firewall,
we tore a nice strip of firewall out around the entire steering column,
    ala a can of sardines....
I kind of felt bad, but the car was super 'picked' already,
a 4-door, and was definitely not a 'saver'....

    Good luck..!!

OK so now you have the column & steering box out of the car. How do you get the column tube out of the box on one of these Chevys. I'd like to get mine chromed.

Sorry to jack this post but I think it's the same question you are asking but has'nt been answered yet.

    Thanks, Billy

  14. Easy way to get the steering wheel off is to back the nut of to the end of the threads. Then give it a whack with a BFH while putting pressure on the wheel from the backside with your knees.

wildwilly i already removed the the wheel. what i'm trying to remove is the colum.

shoebox i'm with you on that. i haven't been able to figure it out yet.

i don't want to just hack it up. i've done other cars and the colum just came right out. i don't want the rod just the housing.

The "housing" doesn't come out of the box. Well...I've been told it's never supposed to. What are you doing with it?
