The farthest for me was 1900 miles. From San Antonio to MT.

A tow dolly should only be used for short trips. Disconnect the drive shaft, and you should be good

    Kentucky to New Mexico.

The truck was badly mis-represented and I drove home with an empty trailer.

    5 hours is local.

The most I have done for a project is about one hour. I delivered some 8 inch rears to a guy in chattanooga. It was about a three hour trip or 180 miles each way

1100 miles one way for a engine ...

I myself would not use a tow dolly for that long a distance but LOTS of folks do. Be sure to remove the driveshaft to be on the safe side. I much prefer a car trailer. That way, you get all the projects 4 wheels off the pavement ... when using a trailer. :)

Also some states require insurance on the vehicle on the tow dolly :(

Yup, good vintage tin really is that hard to find here in MI.

Indianapolis to Hiawatha, KS to pick up and bring back a 1939 Olds with my '51 Chevy 1/2 ton (subframe, 455 Olds, etc...) and trailer in 1988.

545 miles and almost 9 hrs...and back... Great trip!

I've made the Indy to Kansas City trip several times with my old Suburban and trailer...

    Minneapolis to El Paso Texas.
Another vehicle supposed to be in much better shape than it really was. In this case it was a '63 Galaxie wagon the owner of my shop bought on Ebay. He flew me down there and then I drove the car back up across the country- went 1700 miles in 4 days in the middle of Winter. Temperture dropped about 20 degrees each day I traveled north.
    Now that was an adventure!

If the transmission is an automatic, you should pull the drive shaft. A manual you can put in nuetral.
I've never gone more than 50 miles to buy something. Of course in Phoenix you can usually find something around here.
The other problem is when you drive that far and the guy didn't describe it very well it can add to the disappointment.
    Good luck.

  19. As a matter of fact one is on it's way to me right now. Bechtelville PA to Milwaukee WI ( 850 miles ). So technically i didn't go that far to get it , but that is as far away as i have bought a rod.

Prescott AZ to North Platte NE in January!
1,125 miles one way. Car and parts were as described, happy with the whole experience although could have done without the black ice roads in Flagstaff on the trip back.
Here's one from somewhere in Colorado...

Flew from eastern Oklahoma to Phoenix, got on a bus and rode for about 2 1/2 more hours up into the mountains. The guy with the Model A sedan delivery that I went to look at drove up, I walked around the car once quickly, asked to drive it just to confirm my thoughts, drove about 30' to the driveway apron, backed up, got out, handed him the keys and said thanks. Spent the night, rode the bus back, flew back to Oklahoma.
$800 poorer but a heck of lot smarter. One of the worst POS I ever laid eyes on, he clearanced the front fender aprons to clear the front A-arms by beating a huge dimple in them using a hammer. That was some of the better work he did.

Dayton Ohio to Tampa Flroida to get my wagon, checked out the turkey run while I was down there.

  29. I bought two separate cars on two separate occasions from about 1000 miles off, bought sight unseen and had shipped to me.Disappointed a lot on both.Said I would never buy another without looking at it.Last month drove about 6 hours to see one.Was actually BETTER than he described, bought it on the spot.
You would not like to pull a tow dolly far with it unloaded.I used one to pull back a car about 2 hours away and when empty, it is all over the road over 45 and will bounce your brains out on bumpy roads.
