I went out to go for a cruise a few days ago and the battery was flat dead in my '41 Chevy. I pulled it and took the battery (Optima RedTop 34/78) to the shop to charge and test it and it is finished. I noticed that the manufacturing date tag said that it was made in Feb. 2016; I figured that nine years was a pretty good lifespan but it got me to wondering- how long do these Optima batteries last? I figure that most of us drive them mostly spring, summer, and fall and put them away for the winter (except you lucky dogs in California and the South) and don't always keep them on a charger all the time. So.... how long has your battery hung in there- Optima or otherwise?
I bought my first Optima for my '51 in the mid nineties. I am on on my third which I bought in 2019. Well over 20 years for the first two and 6 so far on this one. I replaced the second one prematurely, as I thought it had gone bad, but it turned out that my starter needed brushes. I still have the second one and it still holds a charge. When I am in Florida for the winter, I have it on a regular old battery maintainer, which works fine. My secret is to have the maintainer plugged into a cheap mechanical timer that only charges for 15 minutes, twice a day.
