IMG_2042.JPG IMG_2045.JPG IMG_1906.JPG I've owned my pickup for 12 years. Put about 1000 miles per year on it and change the oil annually. When I drain the oil pan, all I get is about 3 quarts out. Dipstick shows full and engine doesn't burn oil but has a slight drop such that I may add 1/2 quart over a year. The engine is an 8BA with rear sump and old style cartridge filter. Appears to be a flathead dipstick in a stock appearing tube into the oil pan. From what I can see/read,(old posts and manual from a similar engine) at min there should be 4 quarts when drained not accounting for the filter.

What say you regarding my dipstick? It it too long/from a different engine? What am I missing?

    Thank you in advance.

the dip stick is right, i bet the tube is too short. drain the oil and filter, put five quarts in and note the level on the stick.

Thank you! I'm thinking 4 quarts plus one for the filter? Funny thing is that the tube looks normal ( threaded into the pan and flared at the top). Will have to measure that as well.

the filter may add a quart. i don't know for sure, that was just a guess. i would start with the five quarts as listed in the manual.

So, the "about 3 quarts out" is a measured amount?
If you put 5 quarts in and get 3 quarts out.........it's....leaking/burning somewhere!
and that dipstick may or may not be the original to that engine, yes?

2935 - thanks. Actually fill it to full which ends up being three qts or 4 with filter change. I may add1/2 qt during the year.

Gee Whiz, Isn't that getting a little too personal asking how long your dipstick is. But anywho I always run 5 quarts in my flatheads and then mark the dipstick at that level. and I"ve done that for 50 years with not one problem IMG_1449.JPG

when you drain the oil do you have truck up on a jack/jack stands? is frame/motor level then? may want to angle frame/engine slightly to make sure that all oil in motor drains out? is the motor warm when you drain it? may want to drain oil filter by itself to know how much it holds. add 4 quarts, start up motor, then let set for several minutes before checking dip stick. what grade oil running?

You are looking at a Mercury manual. Mercury pans 49-51 I think all take 6 qt's with a filter and 5 without. I may be wrong about the 49 and 50 Merc's, but my '51 Merc with original pan and dipstick take 6with filter. If you look in a 51 Merc. manual this is what it will say. I think all Fords with filter take 5 qt's,k 4 with out filter.

IIRC, a Ford dipstick and Merc dipstick are different from each other....

  24. 7" but some women like 'em that big around.

If you're asking about motor oil dip stick the length of the normal to low mark is in direct relation to the design of the pan, wider pans would use a shorter distance.

  28. Fun is good. There are no doubt a few people around that will tell you that fun is bad, but they are the same ones that come to the end of their life and say, "gee what happened?" :D

  30. LOL I got a young friend here in town who txted me Sunday and asked if the Easter bunny laid bunny eggs all over my lawn. I said nope but the Easter squirrels did. he asked if they were chocolate and I said I wasn't sure but they made my tongue feel funny. he wrote me back and said that his wife said, "Benno you are one sick puppy."
