So, had some time to spare. Thought i would whip the doors off the 35 coupe. So the body was ready for sending off for media blasting. Just 12 little old bolts, thats all. Shouldnt take very long !!!! 6hrs and ive still got 3 left to do. Just curious how long you guys have struggled with a bolt or getting somthing apart ? How long? As long as it takes. Sometimes we get smarter and learn new tricks, but bolts keep coming up with new tricks too.
A bolt holding the alternator on my roadster snapped flush with the block. I had to remove the hood, radiator shell and radiator to get to the broken bolt. A drill and 2 different easy outs(Hell, nothing EASY about it!) I thought I had it and tried to bolt the alternator back on,the bolt was broken in 2 pieces inside the block more drilling and a few choice words and I got the other piece out. Never having what you need on hand it took a couple of trips top the parts store and all day to complete what should have been a minor task. HRP
You work until you run out of band-aids and headache powders. When the wife has packed her bags or the neighbors call the police it's time to take a break. But when you're finished you know you've accomplished something most people can't do. Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk
It's hard to imagine in the late 50s grammar school but my friend and neighbor had words of wisdom... "Anything you go to do takes 5 minutes or 5 hours, there's no in-between". Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk
A five minute task is but one broken bolt from becoming an epic project. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The thing I hate to see is the fellow that removes the broken bolts and replaces them with...More bolts! C'mon, guys...There are studs...and nuts...
Is it just me, or does something look kinda odd about that bottom bolt boss? Been a while since I had a close look a the front of a Chevy. Bones
Remember it takes longer to put together than it does to take apart..................................
My go to method is ,center punch ,drill out broken bolt with increasingly larger sizes till there is not much bolt left around the edges ,apply heat with a mini torch,a squirt of penetrating oil and have at it with your easy out.Seems to work for me. But it always takes longer than you think, good luck.
I once read this formula for estimating how much time a significant project will require....."begin by estimating the amount of time you think it will take...then, go to the next larger unit of time (from an hour to a day for example)....and double that" I've tried this a few times since learning it......and found it pretty accurate. The amazing thing is...even knowing this....I STILL underestimate in the first step..... Ray
Pulling the radiator out of my coupe requires removing the front sheet metal first. I have no idea why some fool would build it that way...OH wait, I built it. Gene
Wife, "I thought you said that it wouldn't take long." Me,"It didn't, but I Decided to do a few more things while I was at it!"
When I was a teen I worked at a service station which was a blast...never a dull moment. One day this old guy brings in an old Chevy for a complete exhaust replacement. He wanted to save money by having us save/reuse all the old hardware. When the guy goes to the restroom the owner gets out boltcutters and snaps every bolt into. When he comes back the owner said sorry, all bolts snapped off. Back then all new hardware was less than the labor would of been which is true today. Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk
