my question is this, if you built or modified an oil pan so you now had to figure out what the oil level should be how would you go about this, what is the correct oil level in relationship to the crankshaft center line for any given engine, remember it is no longer a stock oil pan so quoting a volume won't work, it has to be a distance from the crank center or from the lowest point of the rotating assembly.

distance from the crank? below it a bit. Unless your building a high-end competition mill, just set it so that the oil level is below your crank or windage tray when at rest.

Set the pickup about 1/4- 3/8" off the pan floor and call it good. I weld legs to either side of the pickup so that if you ever cram the pan into something, the legs keep the pan from shutting off the pickup opening.

I like baffles and trap doors, but the one i like the best is a shelf above the pickup that keeps the oil from climbing the back wall of the pan when launching the car. they make bolt on ones for sbc - oil pump baffle is what they call them, i think

You know your dipstick is long enough when you get past the used part.

The Volunteer Firemen have a saying, "it doesn't matter how big the hose is as long as you can put out the fire".
