Back in the heyday there was a VERY thin line between altered and gassers. Guys would switch parts around to run both classes. I think that some the of old guys are getting fogged. Thinking of great stuff and not remembering of what they really did. The face in the dirt, gear oil in the hair, rearend crushing the hand. Springs blowing out of a car on the lift and going through a wall! It wasn't all guts and glory guys!!

Altered morphed into something else just as did all the other classes.

My avatar was built in '65 so when I spotted this at a swap meet last year I couldn't pass it up. Not something I'll ever build, but it'll look good hanging on the wall.

Ya, right Norson, who hasn't said that before!
Come April, you'll be at the PDX swap meet looking for a frame to hang on the wall next to it. And a 327 block, and maybe some Hilborns, oh, dont forget the Vertex mag.
I can hear it all now; hey how much you want for those Halibrands? ya got any spindle mounts? How wide is that Olds/Pontiac rearend?
    Happy building.

    Doug,
If Norm wants a frame, he will build it just as he did back in '65. Here is Norms car, and after he sold it. He didn't know what happened to it, A friend of mine saved this newspaper clipping. It was very competitive in the 60's. Norm\'s Altered 1.jpg Scrivner 2.jpg

Good stuff Marty, never seen either of those photos before.
Anyone want to see some more legendary Northwest names, enlarge the showboard photo.

Norm, sure do like this car.
Where in Beaverton was that Chevron located?
Do you have any build shots or timeline info on your car.
Where does your avatar photo fall in the scheme of things.

I have posted these pictures before. So i apologize. But anyway, this is what I thought an Altered looked like at the end of the fiftys and early sixtys. Altereds had roofs. Roadsters ran in their own class Austin.JPG

The Chevron shot was of the guys I sold it to. I only made one pass with it at Woodburn (no time), the season was over. Was out of money. The motor went one way, the car another. An altered is a team thing and I built it alone. The avatar picture is when it was first completed (summer '66) The engine crate is leaning against the fence. The show picture was the '67 Roadster Show. The chassis pictures below were three months into the build. Ran into Russ Meeks at the Portland swap meet and found out he was the one that painted it when he worked for Dee. My main contact at Radke's was Dale Anderson. I understand he was killed in Nam R1-03040-0022.jpg R1-03040-0021.jpg R1-03040-0024.jpg

I wish there was enough interest in the altereds to get a group together. Sort of like the Gasser guys....Not the Pro Mod crowd, real, vintage, period correct altereds.

    Here are my three altereds:

The first on is my rather O/T Frenchtown Flyer Super Pro. Advanced Chassis; Ford 300 6 cyl.,

The next one is the last altered built at the famed Logghe Stamping Company. I am the original and sole owner.
It also is powered by a Ford 300 6 cylinder. I used to run NHRA S/P and IHRA D/D with it; now I only run a few nostalgia events with it every year.

The last one is really a left-hand-steer roadster pickup but it is an open wheeled, heavily altered body so maybe close enough? It also is powered by a Ford 300 six and interestingly, uses 2.47 rear gears.

I have won a track championship in each car in 2013, 1993, and 2000 respectively.

If you are racing an inline or flathead powered altered please check out the race for you to be held July 9, 2016:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/inliner-flathead-drag-nationals-july-2016.951763/

I plan to have at least a couple of these machines at that race.

A racing organization for altereds would be cool. At the last nostalgia event I attended there was an "open wheel" class for FEDs and altereds. Great fun.

So do you remember the wheelbase on the car? 98" or so?

Here is mine , just bought it. Getting a 671 blown 348 stroked to 380. I am shortening the wheelbase from 125 to 108. It looks more in proportion I think.

  23. Root altered have always been my favorite cars. With or without a roof.
I would be I if there was an altered group.

By the way the Fly has been an inspiration to be for a very long time, and I am a jaded bastard. ;)

I`m in. have run 3 of them and currently run a six cylinder version Once you get in one, you`ll never go back. Something about hanging out in the air and the ease of working on it makes everything more fun.
