This post has proven that most of us (me included) have OT gear boxes, and no one complains! More gears=more better!

When I started, the column was right in the middle of my feet and it had a transmission hump the size of a whale (glass '27 roadster body...no idea who made this one). Since then, I've cut the hump out since the Nailhead bell and Muncie only need a small hump up on the firewall. The column has moved up a few inched which helps too.... so it's looking a lot better. Now I just need to make some pedals or figure out if I can make use of whats already out there.

Well, I guess I will enter the fray here. I have the oddball trans of the week, month, and maybe the year in my avatar roadster. I am running a 354 hemi and attached to it via a Wilcap adapter is a 1976 AMC Pacer overdrive transmission. When I say that as a reply to anyone that asks, I usually get a blank stare or a surprised "WHAT?". To explain, when I built this car, I knew I HAD to have three pedals. I worked for the Border Patrol as a mechanic in the mid 70's and se used Jeep Cherokees with Ford full syncro 3 speed transmissions, Jeep called them T150. They differed from Ford in that they used a top shifter much like 39 and older Fords did. I wanted to get a Ford full syncro 3 speed with overdrive and add the Jeep top cover. I called a friend of mine at Stick Only in the SF Valley, and asked Gordon, the owner, "what years did Ford make a full syncro 3 speed with overdrive ? ". To which he replied, Ford never did, overdrives were on the way out at that time, so if you wanted an overdrive Ford only offered the sliding gear 1st with the old Borg Warner unit attached. Then he said, "But AMC did!". I didn't realize that AMC not only used the Ford 3.03 trans in Jeeps, but in passenger cars. Gordon told me that AMC offered fully syncro 3 speed overdrive transmission in Pacers, Gremlins , and Hornets for three years only, 1975-1977. They weren't that popular and were rare. It turns out that AMC got the transmissions from Ford and the overdrive units from Laycock De Normanville, you know, Jags, Volvos, Astin Martins, Austin Healys and such. After a short search I found a complete unit at Turner's auto wrecking in Fresno ( don't bother checking, I got the only one Jerry had). I bought a T150 top shifter Assyria off Ebay, rebuilt the trans (just because I wanted to be prudent) removed all the side shift parafinalia and plugged the holes in the case. I installed the top shifter and VOILA!, I had an early looking modern trans with electric overdrive. Not only that, everything for the trans is available as a Ford part and overdrive parts are available through Gearvendors since they bought out Laycock! Evert hung I should need is available except the factory AMC adapter from trans to overdrive is an off the shelf item . I installed it in the car and the shifter sits less than 1" from where the original 32 shifter had come through the floor! I added a 36 Ford parking brake assembly and it appears old time, yet everything is modern. I wired a red lighted switch to the O/D solenoid valve and it works quite slick even after almost 14 years and 40k miles. I have a Ford 9" trac-lok with 3:70 gears and it is the best of both worlds ! Even a stock 32 Ford shift knob threads right onto the Jeep shift lever! A fellow I know in the LA Roadsters has one in his deuce roadster and has made two trips around the perimeter of the US with no problems at all. I will be at the LARS Father's day meet this year. If you want to see what I have done, just look for a Washington Blue 32 hiboy with a hemi hanging over the frame rails and 14x31, Firestone double diamonds sprint car tires on the back. Stop by and say hello .

9622D699-1C28-44AA-A8EA-B1FD4F409BD1.jpeg Here’s my Hurst that rows the gears in my 81’ Super T10. Cut the shifter most of the way thru, bent it for clearance and welded it up. This version of the T10 has a 3.42 first gear. Guess it’s good I put in a quick change and 30 inch tall cheater slicks!

I cut my pedals out of 3/8" cold rolled with my sawzall , 1 blade each . my right heel is at the juncture of floor to trans hump . gas pedal is actually over the trans hump ! Just lean your foot at an angle . The only good thing about working with previous work , is you can see whast didn't work ... Oh wait , that's engineering !

Very cool, bet it flies. BTW, you have the chrome flashes on the front fenders on backwards, just flip them side to side. Don't want to anger any purists!

3 speed column shift on our 52 Styleline deluxe needs rebuilt but still runs as is and weve put maaany a slow mile on it as is.. Ive got a 261 w a T5 behind it and a 57 Chev rear and drivesahft ready to swap in that. I Still have the factory Saginaw 3 speed in my 64 C10 rebuilt and converted to floor a
Shift. Id like another gear but it runs damn good w the 283 as is. Got 3 speed floor shift behind the 283 in Pops old 29 Coupe, it works great as is too ! Also have a fresh T5 Dad was going to put in it but the body has to come off for that and I dont even want to open that can of worms right now, It runs great as is so... Have the original Muncie 4 speed in his old 65 GTO also. Have a fresh one a freind built too so that will go in when I have the 389 rebuilt here asap & I'll likely swap the current one in my C10. The only cars we have that are automatics came that way from the factory and also are the ones my wife drives. Her 57 Chevy wagon we swapped the PG for a 700r4 same with the 64 Elco.
