how many "family heirloom" cars out there?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by moparsled, Jan 14, 2006.

  1. how many of you guys are runnin' cars that previously belonged to another member of your family?

I am going tomorrow to pick up my wife's (formerly her dad's) '56 Bel Air 2dr post. She doesn't know it yet, my club members and I are going to surprise her at our local indoor show next month. But it got me thinking about my own hand-me-down Harley FXWG,(Uncle, then Dad, now me)and wondering about the rest of you guys.

I'll post pics in a couple days.

I've got Grandpa's best friends (Harry) first new car-

-Bought by Harry (used) from an employee of the ford dealership who owned it new,

    sold to my Aunt,
who gave it to my mom,
who let my uncle drive it
('til he got his ROADRUNNER anyways)

Who parked it in the shed for 20 years ...

Then I ended up with it.

My brother WOULD have gotten my uncle's 53 chevy longbed,
but he would rather have a TACOMA.

    Some people.

My uncle bought a '68 Charger R/T back in '84 or so from the original owners then gave it to my dad in '87.
    When I turned 16, I got it.
    Still have it. :D

My '65 F100 was bought new by my Grt. Uncle. He wasn't real keen on selling it to me at first since it had been part of his family since the spring of '65, but I eventually got him talked into it. He has been pretty interested in everything I've done to it so far, even the SBC swap, so I think now he's glad he sold it to me instead of just leaving it out in the pasture.

  7. My Dad's cousin bought this 30 ford pickup in 1930 to use around the ranch. When the engine began leaking oil, it was parked in the barn for 40 years. My dad bought it from his cousin in '89, disassembled it and cleaned and painted everything back to it's stock light gray with black fenders. The mic said it didn't even need rings or bearings so the ol man bolted it back together with new gaskets. Finished it up in '90 or so and we drove it around a bit...ran like a top with no smoke. When my dad died in '03, I loaded up my kid's truck, borrowed a car trailer and made the 1750 mile trip to Oregon to claim my inheritance.
Imagine my disappointment when I swung open the shed door to find an oil spot on the floor but no model A! Stolen vehicle report submitted to the state of Oregon but no leads yet..
Flattened the brand new Crane hydraulic cam in my kid's 406 sbc on the way home with an empty trailer in tow..
Not a good trip..hope the pickup turns up someday

  8. Damn Rocky... what a horrible story! I would DIE if I ever rolled up the garage door and the Wideglide was just an oil spot.

my 65 valiant was owned by my grandfather. my uncle bought it for him in lafayette, indiana, and drove it cross-country to the west coast, where it was put on a matson ship and sent over to hawaii. my grandfather was quite the packrat but as a result i still have the original check and the original receipt to ship the car over. only cost $100 back in 1965.

My 52 Chevy pickup was bought new by my great uncle, he handed it down to his son who appearantly wasn't all that mechanical. He let the sediment bowl fill with crud, then when it died out on an old dirt road late one night, he called my dad extremely pissed off. My went out and picked him up. He sold the truck to my dad for $5. We've had it ever since.

I also had my grandfather 67 chevy long bed but like a jackass I sold it. I still regret selling that thing.

My Uncle built my deuce in 67,sold it in 71.I got pictures of me in it when I was 4 years old and remember riding in it when he used to make his "own" cigarettes.LOL It was never seen again until I found it in a garage, unchanged,in 1988 a couple of towns over.I bought it for 2 grand, and drive it today.

My nephew is first in line to get this one.I got daughters and they are not that in to it.

I got great pics of past and present but I can't get them small enough to upload.

  14. We have my wifes grandmothers 1954 Ford 2 door Ranch Wagon that she bought new,,,,she used it for flower shop delivery and personal transportation,,,

She gave it to my wifes dad in the early seventys , he repainted it and drove it to and from work,,,

He passed it on to my wife in the early eightys and it sat in our barn rustin' away since 1982.

In Feburary of 2003 I decided that I had made my wife wait long enough and I was going pull the wagon out of the barn and get it running,,,,,

To this date ,almost 3 years later, it still is not on the road but there has been a lotta work done,,,it was just going to be a quick clean up and drive it car,,,,it's a big project,,,and a LOT of rust to deal with!

If you want to see progress photos of the car from start until now,,,click on my Fotki page,,, HRP

My Dad learned to drive in a 40 Ford Tudor in the early fiftys and has always had a fondness for the model. He loves to tell storeis about being caught by the Patrol for driving without a license. The car unfortunatly didn't survive over the years in the family. I called him in March of 01 telling him about a good rust free 40 Tudor that I had found,it was a disassembled basket case but straight, rust free and pretty complete. He called me back the next day and wanted me to build it for him. I went the SBC/TH350 MII route and he loves it. Just drove it the last time we were together.:D

Not my car but a great story. I have an older buddy who spend three hitches in Vietnam. During his second hitch he went to a Red Cross tent where the USO had car mfg reps there to sell cars to the guys who were expecting to go home soon. For $500 down, you could order any car any of the big three had to offer and it would be waiting for you at your local dealer. He spent three hours deciding and finally ordered a blue '67 GTO with a 389, a Muncie 4-speed and Ram Air. Six weeks later he picked it up at a Dayton, OH dealer. He drove it for about six years and after having his second child decided it wasn't a practical car; the Army had him bouncing all over the US as a Special Forces instructor. He sold it.

Three years ago he was looking for a new project car and found a black '67 GTO with a TH400 for sale in the Akron area and bought it. Upon getting it home and cleaning it out he started finding little hints that it could be his old car. The clincher was the dealer license plate frame that he found in the trunk under the spare tire, the last place he put it in '72! Just to make sure they ran the VIN through the National Pontiac Registry and found that his new/old GTO was one of two Ram Air GTOs sold through that dealer in '67. One was red automatic and one was blue 4-speed, the car this guy just bought was black. It was black on the outside, the door jams and under the hood and truck were still factory blue. He spent the next couple years restoring the car to where it was when he sold it the first time and it remains that way now. And will remain with him until death. After that one of his daughters will own it.

My buddy Bart is now 60 and has been completely blind for better than 10 years. He bought the GTO back and restored it during these blind years. It was the last of three cars he's redone since being blind. Talk about drive. If you need any inspiration in your life, look at Bart. He never stops trying.

Kinda sappy, but it's a great story for a great guy. Incidentally, Bart is always looking for someone to take him for a spin in his GTO. He can't drive anymore, but he can be a great passenger.

My '65 Mustnag's been in my family since 1968, and I've been messing with it since 1988 when I was 11 years old. I've put 70,000 miles on it since I was 16...

  22. A good friend of mine has a '55 Victoria hardtop that came all the way to Wisconsin from Idaho. Real solid car. I used to be his dad's before he passed away, and it's been in the family a long time. He's got a picture of himself standing next to it when he was about 4-5 years old. Told me one time, he can remember jumpin' up and down in the backseat while they were driving around town. I don't think that car could be bought for any amount of money.

The only way this is family is that everyone that has owned it has loved it. My 1912 Model T Ford touring was bought new in St. Joseph MO. I have the original owner's name. He kept the car 'til he died. A Ford dealership in St. Joe bought it about 1940 and painted it red. They kept it 'til they went out of business, bankruptcy so the story says. A bank, not sure which one, got it as part of the settlement. The pres. of the bank liked it so much he kept it in the basement of the bank instead of selling it for cash, like he should have. Then the fellow I got it from heard of it, talked him out of it, and restored it about 20 years ago. I saw the ad in the paper, went to look at it, and told himl I'd think about it. Halfway home, after talking it over with a wonderful wife, I called him back and bought it. The speedo shows just over 4,000 miles. It is the strongest running T I have ever driven, smooth, quiet, and powerful. It will stay in my family, both my kids would like to have it someday. I drove it to the KC Goodguys show this last September, and it was one of the most photographed cars there. The last time I drove it, I think the ring gear in the rear end broke, they do that sometimes. Time to get into that and put 'er back on the road!

  27. When my dad was 14, he got his first car a 32 chevy 5 window. My dad and his dad (grandpa i never got to meet) worked on it, dad went to the service and his dad got it running. 265 chevy, 3-speed manual, and 38 ponitac rear and front juice brakes. Dad didn't like the "buggy" ride it had when he got outta the service, so he undid it to make a rod outta it. played with some other cars, my brother and i came along and it was only to sit for years. I still remember the frame bolted flat to the garage wall and the body mounted to the garage wall so he could fit the 63 vette under it. shit happened in the late 80's and it was sold to a friend to be street rodded. years later, about 7-8 ago I asked my dad what happened to it, and if it would be for sale if his friend still had it. I kick myself in the ass for not asking his friend myself, it could have been mine! My dad asked his friend, struck a deal and brought it home. I got called over for dinner, and after dinner, he took me out the the garage, and there is was, he never told me he got it, I almost shit my pants, there it was, and the title was still in his name from 66! He's slowly street rodding it, but someday it will be mine, to recreate what my grandpa made. I'm still looking for a 32 Chevy 5 window for myself, and will always bug people the find them to see if i can ever get my hands on one....but i've been told that if i ever dug up a 32 chevy roadster, my dad might trade.... I really gotta bug him to dig up the pics from 65 of his car.

  28. Does getting my mom's one owner '90 Ford Escort station wagon with 16,000 original miles count  .

That got replaced by a PT Cruiser. Think that'll be her last car.

Now if I had only kept the '62 Plymouth Fury convert she bought brand new. She gave it to me about 15 years ago and like a dummy I sold it 'cause it wasn't a Ford or Chevy :( .

    A mint green 1956 Thunderbird.

My uncle restored it about 30 years ago with intentions of selling as part of his restoration business. When he was finished with the restoration he decided to keep it. After he passed away the car went to his daughter, who put it in climate controlled storage for 13 years. She then gave the car to my father. It now gets driven nearly every day in the summer. The car will likely go back to her daughter when she's old enough to appreciate it. I can barely squeeze my fat ass behind the wheel but it's a real trip to drive around town. People just love it.

My dad bought this A in '63, in high school, against his mothers will. 100k+ miles later, it's still in the garage with dad.
