How many? Father and son teams here?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by old beet, May 9, 2006.

  1. Well, I'm just gettin' this thing rollin here! My dad wasn't into cars much, but somehow I ended up with this addiction. Now I have a 17 month old son Harrison (h-bob) and a 1 month old son Hudson (number 2), and I'm doing my best to brainwash Harrison, so we can double team his little bro. I would like to thank the Hamb for giving me a platform to perform said brainwashing activities.:D All of the burnout and drag racing videos are awesome and Harrison really digs em'. When Denise gets well, she should be posting some recent pics of Harrison "driving" a few choice roadsters.:D Maybe by next summer I can turn my pile of parts into a real car.

I'm a regular on here and both my sons are also the oldest Leon is usless though he only likes 70 up chevy but the Hamb is wearing him down he's finaly willing to help restore the drag car I've owned almost as long as him!but thats because of all the kind remarks of those hambers who have seen pics of it "in the day "and he now understands a little of the value of a car with a history.Mike my youngest at 26 has moved to Georgia with his fiance and hes a member here he's into anything mechanical or electronic and if he was still close bye would be setting up the fuel injection wiring for one of my projects.his girl said she had to come all the way to Ct.to see a redneck repair !I used an old gas grille to pre and post heat a broken exhaust manifold on mikes mazda when I welded it for him.now Leons son wants my 66 corvair to "fix UP"he's barely 15 and likes OLD cars and his 12 year old sister is already asking if I'm taking her to the realy big car show in Worcester again this summer so it looks like the old car curse will continue in this family for atleast another generation

Godzilla and Son of Godzilla...speaks for itself, huh. My dad grew up on a farm and his family drove a 34 Ford Sedan. He thought it was dumb to try to fix up an old car when you could buy a shinny new one.

When he was in his mid-sixties I talked him into a 39 Graham Paige. It was an old military car....still had the little vases in the back though. Everything was going along fine until some joker saw it and offered him an obscene amount for it...so it went down the road.

When my aunt died she left him a pristine 51 Stude. So he kept it and joined the stude club (dad died three years ago). While growing up I had about a billion cars from the 20s to the 60s. Too many to even count. Turning wrenches was my business...and when I was not working I was driving the wrecker in the country looking for old iron. there were lots of cars in Kansas back in the day.

I started taking my son to work with me as soon as he was out of diapers. He was a good hand...fetched tools and helped with all kinds of things around the shop...but he didn't catch the "car bug."

He seemed to like cruising with me...sometimes...but I could tell he would rather be somewhere else...playing with his friends. He turned down a variety of muscle cars when he first started driving...so his first car was a black buick rivi with black interior and black convertable top. He took it but really didn't like it.

This long story has a happy ending though. Today he is building a 37 PU, BBC that is a bad mofo. I get to help some and he is still my right hand in the shop. He is my partner on my HAMBster/32 Austin thingie and soon I will be sending my blown 40 Willys PU down the road to a new home, thanks in no small part to his help.

"Father and Son'ing" is the best...I am glad to have had the car-skill thing to pass on to him. My favorite thing to do...is to take my son to a swap meet and just spend the day kicking around old parts and looking for bargains.

Well, I think in the next coming years I might be joining the group. My old man and I live a little distance away from eachother so it makes it hard to work on a car together. But when Im off to college Ill be right near him so well definatly throw some wrenches. He has some good ideas.

Dad died in '80, I got the car, and he's with me in spirit whenever I turn a wrench on it.

  6. My dad was a car guy,but just a car appreciater. He couldn't turn a wrench to save his life, but he had some sweet rides. He had:'34 Pheaton,'39 Chrysler coupe,'57 Chrysler 300 CONV!!!,i came home from the hospital in it,and a '58 Newyorker we used to call the "Batmobile" cause of the wings. My mom ,on the other hand, was a real car lover. She would call me all the time when her and my dad were out and say"there's a hotrod show here, come see".I'd get in my bug and go wherever to be with her.She would have loved my shoebox and the Merc.Too bad I was only able to finally get my dream cars after selling their house when my dad died last year.Miss her every time I drive them.

  9. Yep my dad had me turning wrenches at like 2 as well so I didn't really have much choice ! (thanks dad :) ). He helped me build my customline, I helped him build his 56 Victoria (which just won Top Custom at our nationals which is pretty cool, nice one dad!). Now I've got my own place and soon to be own garage, he'll be coming around a bit more to help me out too :)

My sister didn't escape either...she's got a 60Chev that me and the ol' man are always working on for her...she doesnt know what to do, but she knows what a half/nine sixteenths ring spanner looks like though :)

Once she has some kids and I have some, they won't have any choice either....the old man (and my sister) are already stockpiling cool pedal cars and shit like that! :)

My dad made my first bicycle and my first motorcycle out of scraps that most folks would throw away. He taught me how to turn wrenches and reuse old parts, he taught me how to do it myself, he taught me to work hard and take care of my family.

We don't get to see each other every day, but we still meet for car shows and swap meets, and we still get to work on our projects together. I keep my tools in the same tool box that he used when I was a kid, and the screwdriver drawer stills stinks, just like it did when I was five years old.
    Thanks, Dad!

My dad has a '40 Ford 2 door sedan since 1979. I have my 1940 Plymouth 2 door sedan since 90. When both of our cars were in primer people would confuse the two cars.

My son is Dakota here. He is 27. He grew up running around the country with me in my '38 Chevy rod. He's got it real bad. Shows every sign of exeeding the old man in every way. Proud? Damn right I am!

Pops got me into engines when I was 4 or 5. "you want to take something apart,Here is a lawnmower. Have at it" I moved up to minibikes and into circle track stuff in my teens. He always was telling me that racing is just throwing your money down the drain. One day after a long season had just ended I woke up and said " whoa,,, the old man's right I spend all week prepping a car for 22 other assholes to use for target practice!" .
So I got the tudor and i think at that point he wished I stayed racing. However since we put the coupester together last year, I keep hearing him say we need to do that again. Thanks Pop
