Looked at a rod or custom at a rod trot or in the photos from a show here on the HAMB and though "I could fix that car/truck real easy by-------- For me it is usually what looks like the owner/builder made the wheel/tire combination on the car as a total afterthought or went to the tire store and told them to "put the cheapest mags and tires you have on it cause I'm almost out of money ". A longtime local friend has a sweet little 32 Ford 5 window that is chopped just right, full fendered and he has owned it for the past 30/40 or so years. The car was built way back when and for the most part has the look. Except that it has some mid 70's wide (think really wide that are actually as old as 50% of the members here) 60 series tires front and rear on fairly wide rims and the interior while nice looks like it belongs in a lowrider. A fast tire change and a trip to the right upholstery shop and the car would knock us on our ear every time we saw it. We all know of "that car" that we see around at the shows that would be so slick with just a few simple changes or possible removal of some add ons that just don't fit the theme of the car. I'm not talking about making radical changes like chopping or even repainting a car but simple things that a couple of guys could do in a Saturday that would make an existing car right in most guys eyes. Think buying the car on Saturday morning and show up with a new look at the Saturday night cruise that works and gives the car a new at***ude. It isn't fair to show photos of cars unless you show a photo shopped photo of the changes you would make or you actually show the before and after photos of the quick makeover you did on a car. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
Critiquing peeps cars publicly that aren't asking for the "help"?? Sounds like something the Old Farts would do behind peoples backs.
Hmmm I never set out to build anything for "most guys", maybe thats what I'm doing wrong. I should build my pontiac to appeal to "most guys" then I could be in whatever club has the "most guys".... I should stop right now and take opinions! Oh but then I would have to give a **** about what most guys think!
Hahahahahahahaha...taste is very subjective...just becuz YOU think it would improve the car, I'd be willing to bet the next guy in line would think you're nuts. "Fair"...??? Life isn't fair...you won't get out of it alive...why would anyone want to walk up to the owner and say "Look at this picture, here's how I'd improve YOUR car..." I'd tell you to take a fly and then add, "If you don't like how I did MY car, then buy it and change it yourself." R-
I agree to a point... Most of the time I see really bad *** cars with really bad wheels on it. But it's just something I think to myself and move on... If everyone had the same taste, life would get boring real quick. I try to worry about myself mostly.
About the only people I tell whats "wrong" with someones car is my kids, and make sure nobody is close enough to hear us talking. Dont have any problems telling someone when its "right", though.
Damn right we do! The operative words are behind peoples back which to me means being polite. I won't lie if asked but this hypothetical question doesn't point anyone out. I think we all do. We all have opinions. We all discuss what we like between friends as we walk around the show grounds. I'm always saying check this out because it's cool or can you believe this because it's hideous. If I like something I think it's important to let the owner know. If I don't care for it, he doesn't need to know that unless he asks for an honest opinion and even then it has to be pretty egregious or I will just say it's not my style. Old farts can be nice guys too.
If its saftey related I'll point it out. I might be next to em when it lets go. If its a matter of taste I'll make a mental note not to specify that when I write the gold chain check. If somebody built it and has the love and dedication and effort in it then its *****en. Rims are transient, as are carbs and paint. If its ugly, maybe its to take the heat off his ollady.
I took a "friend" to the LSRU last year, and after hearing him talking smack about every car there, needless to say I didn't invite him back. We all have our personal taste and opinions, but we have to remember the owner of that vehicle also has their own style or taste. And while we might not agree with it, that is what they wanted to do with their car.
come on man i know you got better things to do than rag on peoples taste yea it might not be up to your liking but maybe that guy loves it and that is what its all about right building your own car not what other people think is kool
Can you clarify old farts? I'm one but I don't express negative opinions on anyones ride!! I might think that's not for me, but not out loud.
I'm no critic. It's just best to keep those things to yourself. I have thought that certain cars would look cooler if they were done another way but it's not my car and I don't make the call over what is cool and what ain't.
Yep agreed, and discussing it quitely with your buddy is one thing but "discussing" what needs to be changed to someone's pride and joy on a public internet, when they didn't ask for your opinion, is just plain ignorant no matter how "constructive" you want to be. Put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel if you think your car is perfect and all of a sudden some jerks on a message board post a photo of your car and are "discussing" what you "should" do to "improve" your car in their opinion. Respect people, it's not hard.
Not trying to piss on anyones parade, but I never built a car for general approval, only mine. Frankly, I could care less what someone says in front of, or behind my back. Opinions are welcome, but understand that an opinion, like anything else, can be used, or tossed. negative comments simply piss me off. "Better" is something that changes from person to person until safety becomes an issue. IF there were a crowd I was building my hot rod to attract, it sure as hell would not be guys...sorry. Now go on and talk trash about my truck...as I have said before I will still smile and hand ya a beer! We are here for a fun hobby, not to nitpick someone elses creation. If I am not interested in a vehicle, I can still respect the builder and his/her efforts, and walk towards something I enjoy. Enough said.
Sure that is fine and dandy if we all had unlimited funds and resourses like you obviously have. I put rims and tires on my car and no, they are not exactally what I want but they were within my budget and they are better than what was on the car. I see no problem with that.........Don't fault people because they can't afford what you want on their cars.
damm! thats 2 threads already today that had the smell of burning flesh. must be that time of the month, bill time!
you guys are brutal - we all know what he is talking about - its not the guy who cant afford better wheels - or taste - i think its the guy who has the 50k duece with the k mart directionals on it.
Denise, as an older guy, this pissed me off at first. Then I agreed with this, and felt that we old guys were vindicated. Then I saw this and realized what you were talking about and I have to agree with you. I wish they'd change the name of that club, there's no telling what's going on in there to soil the good reputation of the rest of us "old farts". Oh, and what are you doing hanging around an old farts club anyway young lady?
i said something about how someones car would look so much better if he would ???? to a friend of mine - he blew a fuse and opened my eyes to something i had not really thought to much about. he said to just imagine how boring car cruises would be if every car here was done exactly how you would do them. i looked around and it kinda scared me that i let myself think that way. peoples different tastes and imaginations are what brought us to where hotrodding is today.
Nonsense. There isn't a car guy alive or dead that hasn't walked through the pits or a car show and thought to himself "Man, if I had this car I'd do this, that & this". To say it out loud in earshot of the owner however, would make you an ***hole in most peoples eyes. But talkin' about a car later on with your buddy ain't "talkin' behind somebodys back". I'd say it's more like bench racing. Talking about cars and looking at em' is half the fun.
