even if you don't like your Saturn, carry one for the idiots who don't have one. I would hate to see someones car on fire and not be able to do something, I have put out a number of small fires for people over the years,

Yes, the powder can settle and harden over time.

Have one in ALL my cars. Cheap to get and really valuable if you need it.

I have carried a rechargeable one for many years. I'm a retired firefighter and I saw too many car fires that could have been handled easily if someone just had a good extinguisher and knew how to use it. I have used mine several times. Thankfully never on my wheels but someone else who needed help. Good investment if the owner takes the time to learn how to use and maintain one.

Had my 36 Ford light up one night and burn for want of an extinguisher! Someone brought one over from the grocery store across the street but it was only partially charged! Finally got the fire out but it wrecked the car! Not a total loss but could have been. Had to repaint front fenders, cowling, hood. Replaced all wiring and rebuilt the radiator, etc, etc.
Made me a believer! I carry one now in the roadster - bolted to the floor in front of the passenger seat.

Bet ol' Tom Medley would have paid hi bucks for one at his scary moment!!

YEP, I got um' in all my cars!

From all the replies, a kill switch at reach is great too!----I got one.

During an electrical fire----If you can access the battery quickly---Cut or remove just one lead---It will cease any power to the flame!!!

Used to drive a wrecker at night a long time ago and lost track of all the cars we saved having one on board all the trucks the company owned that I drove for. I always have at least one in every car I own, 4 large ones strategically placed around the shop and three in the house. All are readily accessable and in plain sight. Who gives a damn what they look like when you need one.

I have a fire extinguisher bolted to the side of my travelin' tool box. That way no matter whatever I am driving, I have a fire extinguisher.

I carry a fire extinguisher in both of my '67 Plymouth Furys ever since I had the interior fire in the convertible in 2005:eek:. Luckily, I was able put it back in good shape but the fire extinguisher goes with it everywhere now.

Anybody that's had fire experience usually does.

Yes as B.A.Kings friend said... the powder in dry powder extinguishers can become packed. It is a good idea to turn it 180* from the way that it is mounted and hit it a few times with a hard rubber mallet.

  20. A little 2 1/4 lb BC or ABC all purpose dry chemical extinguisher could make the difference between minimal damage or standing along side road swapping thumbs. Remember fellow HAMB'ers to use the PASS method if you have to use one.

    P = Pull the pin
A = Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
S = Squeeze the trigger and apply agent
S = Sweep back and froth acroos the base of the fire.

Never turn your back on the fire and leave yourself an out.

    Cheers,
    Jim

Picked up a Halon this morning in fact, as I didn't have a good place in the interior to put the big old ABC. Now have the halon easy to get to, and have the ABC as a back up in the trunk.

I certainly do. I also replace it every two years. They do go bad so I don't take any chances just replace.

Aircraft Spruce also carries Halon fire extinguishers that are reasonably priced for Halon. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php
Fire extinquishers can also become projectiles of death in event of an accident. Homemade seat frames that may collapse during a crash onto a fire extinguisher mounted underneath would also be undesirable. The mount bracket, hardware and location are all important decisions that need to be considered.

    Good advice.

Fire Extinguishers should be checked once per year if rechargeable.
Every month during the cruise season, they should be shaken as they will "cake" up or settle from the car vibrations and the heat/cool cycles experienced in the interiors and may not spray if needed.
And if its a re-chargable, don't get one with a plastic heads, they may break during a re-charge.

If it has been sitting for a while, turn it over and tap the bottom to ensure the pressure gauge is still reading correctly.

And yes, I do carry one, easily accessible.
