grew up working on the family cars with my dad... till the "magic words" started flowing, then I went in the house for a while; now my middle son (15) is a major motorhead; has helped me with my 57 Fairlane; now he's chompin' at the bit to have his own car to work on; hope he won't pick up any of my "magic words"; its the best time in the world, working on cars with your kids!

the pickups keep the interior cost down to a minimum...let them know a little bit about the cars but when they starting asking for 32's and 40's it gets tough finding them for sure LOL:D

That was EXACTLY how it was with me and my Dad. :D

Truckncoupe, thats a fact. Those sparse old interiors sure are easy on the pocketbook. :D

Yesterday we spent the day getting the parts car for the 13 year old. (1 of 3...to build 1) Today, the 15 year old and I spent all day looking at old cars and rounding up the misc. parts for his Duster. He even logged 4 and 1/2 hours behind the wheel....pulling an empty car trailer.

Tomorrow we go and get the solid shell that will be the base for the 13 year olds Mustang. Over 1000 miles in three days. :)

The 8 year old has informed me that what he really wants is a 69 Charger... Talk about champagne tastes.....

What's a dad ? No experience with one of those growing up.

Since I got married we have two kids, our son at 12 days old went to heaven in 1994 as God needed him, (Sorry if I offended anyone with the religious tone).
Blessed with a daughter in 1995 and neither the wife or her has an interest in cars.

She has been an A or A+ student her whole time in school and to this day help's out in the library, so when she wanted to take karate, we sold the street rod.
Now that she is into horse back riding and getting a 3.83 grade point average, were selling the street rod project.
She has earned her hobbies and I'm proud to support her. I'll have time later !
Time can not be bought back or turned back, but cars can be.

  6. My dad and I built the flathead for my 50 Ford when I was 16 and he helped me stab it...ran great!
When my son was 15 he found a 50 ford he wanted and we made it a father/son project. Together we built the engine [406 SBC], put a shift kit in the 350 turbo, narrowed the rear frame and mini-tubbed it. Had a buddy install the nova clip. He got it running but still needs steering shaft, wiring etc.
That was over 20 years ago and he still has his coupe but it still needs to be finished.
I wouldn't trade those hours together for a million bucks.

My daughter would work on cars when she was very young but now wants nothing to do with old cars.

My son has helped me with car projects from a young age and is now building a 1950 Chevy with his own money. He and I have had many hobbies over the years but building his car has been the best one yet.

My son and I have been working for about 2 years on his first car, a 1993 GMC S15, and it has been fun, yet trying! :) All new sheet metal and full repaint. Now we are lowering it and doing a custom interior in it (thankfully I have been doing custom interior work since '93 so that is one area I can save some coin on). Then a SBC this next winter hopefully. It has truely been fun working side by side with my son on it though. Finding out that we have so many things we both can agree on. I would like to do the samething with my daughter now in the next year for her first car too. OH THE MEMORIES!!! P.S. Hoping to work with my dad on my latest project (34 Plymouth 2-door sedan) this spring and summer too.

update: my son is now 16 and has finally bought his car... 63 Mercury Monterey, 2 dr hrdtp, complete with working electric rear "Breezeway" window! its a project for sure; runs but came from WI and it's seen its fair share of salty winter roads!!

got the car with the help of a friend with a car trailer; straight up and back weekend roadtrip to Clarksville, TN from Houston and back!

we've begun by first getting it safely driveable... brakes, steering, tune up, etc...

son has also landed his first job to pay for this restoration! I'm so proud!

Pics to come soon for those who might be interested.

I'm new here but this thread hit a heart string...I started a project Corvair 3 years ago with my oldest (19) and now he's in college and not a lot of time to help me, but my daughter (10) has been bugging me for a year to help HER! build a Corvair convert I have so we drug it out and have been cleaning for the dis-assembly and rebuilding. I just hope she sticks with it. She's a go getter..my little tom boy!

My daughter and I started a project when she was 15, that was 22 years ago. The truck, a 36 Chev PU has been on the road since she was 16. We still have a few things to do to it, but it gets driven every summer.
