My dog gets pushed inside the house when I weld or grind. He, too, tries to catch the spark in his mouth. He's not real bright...

Good point, I have three dogs and about 10 years ago I noticed that they were fascinated with me welding, the dummies were staring at the light,
and then bumping into things, because they had welders burn.
Take your dogs out of the shop when welding!!!!!

I hope you guys know I was kidding.
The first time my puppy was in my shop when I was welding, I noticed how facinated she was and wouldn't take her eyes off it. From that time on, she's out of the garage when ever the welder is turned on.

  4. Ledsled and Dreadman,

Thanks for those answers. I don't weld yet, but was wondering about how the dogs are protected. Just imagining how a pooch says, 'sandpaper'. 'Ruff', huh?

Great info on the eye protection. Will buy an auto-darkening hood and gauntlet gloves along with the other welding gear.

Every time I go to get my re qualification on welding I tell myself i'm going to get a autodarking helmet. I'm old school helmet 10 shade flip and weld.

I'm a total amateur with the welding. I can't do the helmet nod without losing my place. Super frustrating. After welding by looking away/closing my eyes/hiding the pool behind the gun a couple of times I decided it was a stupid risk and bought a $50 auto darkening helmet. Just cheap thin plastic really, but for the amount I weld it should stand up ok. Totally worth it.
