How many pairs of "Vise Grips" do you own???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rustydusty, Mar 2, 2011.

  1. After reading an earlier post mentioning a pair of vise grips being used as a door handle, I realised that I had a pair (why are they a pair, when it is only one tool?) doing the same thing! Of all the hand tools i've owned, These are probably the most "versatile". No other brand or knock-off will do, (Craftsman are "passable") and they are practically indestructable! I have many different sizes and styles and have used them for all different kinds of applications. I am always careful not to use them on something I don't want marks on, but for everything else they are indispensable!

Lets hear it for the humble "Vise Grips"!

I have at least 10 pairs!

I had 7 in various states of abuse, so last week I saw a closeout at our local farm store and bought all they had. 13 pairs at $2.91 each.

I've got drawers full.. probably 20+ pairs at work, same at home...

and then i've got 2 pair brand new in the old boxes, one curved, one straight jaw.. probably not worth anything, but the boxes look cool!

I'd say at least ten of the standard, run of the mill vise grips. . . but if you count the wide jaw kind for welding, and the wide flat jaw type, etc. . . I'd say over 25 pairs.

I think it's called a pair cause it has two handles, like a pair of pliers? Maybe? Who knows. haha.

20+ in various configurations and specialty clamps. Plus the many sacrificed for the making of low buck specialty tools. It is certianly one of the tools you get what you pay for.

I'm easily up to 25+...a lot of the,what,18"-24"+ welding clamp ones, too.Actually found one I'd never seen before on Monday.Wandering around a legit, old time little hardware store when I was out of town, and found the model that has the jaws that surround a bolt.It was the ONLY USA one they had,and I snatched it up.Plastic packaging had turned yellow, and on the back,it said 1996/1997..$15.13 later,I walked out with a smile on my face...I'd have bought more,if the little old lady had had them...

Not that it really means anything to anyone else, but my Grandpa was a friend of the guy that invented Vice Grips. My Grandpa visited the factory in Dewitt, Nebraska and got a pair of tiny chrome-plated Vice Grips that the guy handed out to friends.

On to how-many I own, I figure including the ones on my '00 S-10 as a hood-release , and the pair I use to steer my '56 F-100 project in and out of the garage about a dozen pair.

In 2005 while I was at Hot Rod Bikes, I did a tech story on how to use Vice Grips for shower pliers.

How's that for a bunch of useless information?

I dont know, I cant find them all

  27. It's a "pair" because there are two "grippers".

I use a small Vise-Grip as a knob for the range fan in the kitchen.

  28. Answer to " who cares?" Nobody really but its kinda funny how many you actually do need.
I had 6 sets, all in use and needed 8 more. So off to the store and grabbed 4 large and 4 mediums
My girl (who thinks what I do is incredibly fascinating but beyond comprehension for her) asked me "why anyone would need more than just one ?"
13 sets and 15 welders. Need a few more 24"ers

  29. I have at least 18 pairs. Duck bills, needle nosed, curved jaw, straight jaw. I keep a few in the kitchen tool box, a few in the basement and the rest scattered about the tools in the garage.

All are name-brand USA made, even the old weld-spattered ones work like new.
