Al- I'll call Vince and tell him your coming. He has a real nice 55 Chev and 47 Ford shop truck. I'm not sure if he's on here. While your in the neiborhood stop and check out my new roadster, hopefully ready for the Violators in May, ( If I can get it inspected).

Did anybody go through that inspection with a vehicle with their gas tank in the bed of a truck like mine? I'm getting my truck up to standard to go for my street rod tags and I was just told this past weekend I would not pass unless my gas tank is visible from underneath the vehicle and the filler is outside the body. So now I either have to cut a hole in the bed and drop the tank down and than run a filler neck through the bed side or have to install a new tank underneath.

I had my bucket inspected last summer. He didn't look at the gas tank, and I didn't have it through the body. I hear they are supposed to be checking it. He also let me go without wipers.
I got my paper work back, they didn't see the wipers and turn/parking lights. I had to put on a wiper and show the turn/parking lights in the headlight.
The guy who inspected mine didn't look it over very good, I was dissapointed, I was expexting more for the money.
I have an extra rear window trim for that chevy pickup if you need one.
I'm starting on a '36 , so far I got the wood out, have the cab and one door chopped 2 1/2" I'll be doing the other door tomorrow.

Timmy and Mag 38- The PennDot rules will not allow the tank like you have it. When I titled my red roadster pickup they had to have extra pictures and a detailed explaination that the bed on that truck could not be used as a cargo area. It is my understanding that DOT regs do not allow a gas tank in the bed whether or not you can see it from below. The way some guys do it is to remove the entire bed floor for inspection and put it down later. I also understand they will allow a full steel panel over the tank with an open bottom, (to see the tank from below). Also remember, no bottom pickups! The fuel supply must come out the top of the tank so if you break a line the entire tank will not run out. I think you must also have a roll over valve but I'm not 100% sure about that.

All Pa inspection regs are on line at PA.Gov.PennDot. As I mentioned above Vince at Hawk Mountain Inspections knows these things by heart and will be honest with you. I think some of the shops don't know rods or are just looking for work. I trust Vince.

To all of you out there taking my stupid advice about covering the tank and then pulling it later be advised I know a lot of cops and they do know DOT regs. They will scrape your sticker on the spot and have it towed if you give them cause. Most of them have been very cool as long as you are to, (especially in Jersey, go figuier).

I'd like to know where in the penndot regs does it say anything about the fuel tank not being mounted in the bed or visible from below? Sillyness... I've got my PA inspection license and I've read all the material front and back and don't recall any mention of it. I also went through the "enhanced inspection" process and had my '34 with the tank in the bed and a bottom feed passed and titled as a streed rod in PA less than two years ago. Unless this is something quite recent, it sounds like some mechanic's been making your life harder than it has to be...

Edit: Guess I'm eating crow for lunch today, I just looked through my manual again and there is a mention of the fuel system components not being in the passenger compartment or cargo area. Guess the guy that did my enhanced insp. and the DMV both overlooked it...

Thanks for the information, all I was able to find on the penn dot website was the following....

    Fuel Systems
    – No fuel tank, fuel cell or fuel line may intrude into the driver, passenger or
cargo compartment of the vehicle unless it was originally so designed. All fuel system

components must be designed specifically for use in a vehicle fuel system.

Well this is going to be a struggle to mount a new gas tank since I already have my exhaust run and lost alot of space below the bed. I might have to take my chances if I don't get it done by end of winter

loranzo46- Hawk Mountain Inspections is just outside of Hamburg, Pa. off Rt. 61 & 78. There phone # is in the book or PM me and I'll look it up for you. A lot of rod guys like Vince, the owner, because he's one of us and super knowledgable on rod inspections. They are an enhanced inspection station and also they are a notary who can and knows how to file PA titles. They will advise you on exactly what you need to do to get your title the first time with no bullshit or snow jobs to get work for the shop.

Timmy and Thunderbirdesq- Theres actually more detail than you were able to find. I'm not an inspection mechanic but I have had the regs shown to me and they are fairly detailed. I do know that state PennDOT and federal DOT regs coincide and preempt each other. The stuff you found pretty much tells the story though.

Perhaps we should start a thread just on this subject to see if anybody can find the entire printout on this fuel tank stuff, along with wiper regs, ( I understand Pa is no longer accepting hand wipers as legal?), along with the related changes effective last year.

Koz, there was a thread on the enhanced Pa. program about a year ago. Do a search. I don't remember discussion about the fuel tanks of trucks though. I DOUBT they would be allowed to be in the bed, but it's just a guess.

Hell, there's multiple instances just in the PA reg book of rules that contradict themselves! The book I have is 3 years old, but that's all it really mentions about the fuel system. The instructor I had when I took the course had been teaching it for 25 years. He stated plainly that in many cases, a blurry situation is left to the inspector's best judgement about safety.

How do they expect you to mount a power wiper on a roadster? The fine print often states "if originally so equipped". Like the last satement in the regs about fuel systems. It's arguable that if you're designing/building a streetrod that has the fuel tank in the bed,(especially if you're building the entire chassis) in this configuration of the vehicle it has been "designed to be there". A perfect example of the law giving the inspector a chance to use his best judgement. That said, I think a lot of inspectors "play it safe" and obviously won't risk their inspection priviledges and reputation by letting something that they think may pose a risk out of their shop with a sticker on it. I'm just playing devil's advocate here a little bit, thank god I don't have to deal with this crap anymore. :D

Over and out, back on topic!

Count me in. My heart is in Pennsylvania. To cold for me, but I did my time. When you guys went hunting I was the guy that was called, cause your furnace broke down and the wife was freezing. Many times I worked all day and into the night, keeping your as_es warm, so now its my turn to be warm. But I love Pgh, my wife who is not from the Burg, says GOD must live there, cause I am always braggin Pgh, and what is or was made there. Ice man

  26. I have a PA. state inspection station. I was told if the tank is in bed of truck the tank must be enclosed by sheet metal and open underneath of tank, that is a opening cut in bed or floor as big as foot print of tank. The same goes for interior of car. Timmy if you have any questions about this send me an e-mail, Hank.

Somehow the PA inspection comes up a lot. Do a Google for the PACODE-this will get you started:
