"Awhile ago", - I picked up a Ford Van that was sold to me as having a fukked engine by a truck shop I knew. The engine would start but shake and knock loud and terribly like just before seizeing. . I towed it home and drained the oil to pull the engine. The @ 6 quart pan quicky filled and ran over the sides, I put another pan underneath and that ran over!. 'Took a couple of gallons of oil out of it and found the dipstick was WRONG. After refiilling with correct amount of oil, it ran for another ten years or so before turning to ferric oxide. Powerband

so i get a fresh rebuilt 283 for my impala and it has a distinct loud tick to it. deeper than a valve, but not a rod. everybody SWORE it was a wrist pin. got the stethoscope and prowled around, noise was coming from the p***enger side of the car, closer, closer and i could hear all sorts of hell coming from the fuel pump with the stethos blocking out the rest of the engine. pulled it off, and it had about 1/4" of slack until the arm hit the spring in it. i was ****tin bricks for a minute...

I had a 289 ford oil pump freeze and the rod from the dist. would turn and pop in the oil pump and sounds just like a rod.

I was doing hot laps in my GTS last year when it sounded like I had a rod knocking. Turns out the dowel pin from the ****** had come out and was rattling around in the bellhousing. A month after that, I missed a shift at 70 mph (went from 2nd to first, instead of third). I spun the 2nd rod bearing and the sound was identical.

Well I fire it up to move it over to where I had the truck and My new best friend Mike with a very cool hemi powered 32 sedan hears it and gets under says it "Feels" like it's coming from the inspection cover for the flexplate and converter. So I get under and put my hand on the cover and sure enough it seems like the noise is actually coming from there.

Now Mind you it still sounds EXACTLY like a rod hammering away. So I figure I have nothing to lose by dropping the cover and seeing what happens. So we take the car over to the camping area and Tony from the PackRats(Thanks again man) helps me get the car up on some blocks so we can get under it easier and get the pan off. We get the pan off and guess what, about a pound of mud and rocks:eek: !!!

So I start it up and nothing, no noise:D My luck day!!!!!!!!!

Rudy,I was so siked up when I saw you driving the U-haul away with the empty tow dolly..It made my whole weekend knowing I was able to help you out. Thanks for the props on my sedan!

  9. Had a knock in my 52 caddy. Figured it was a rod since it started right after a small whiskey fuelled burn out session one night. Well, when I dropped the pan and started shaking rods, they all seemed fine! WTF? I asked myself. When I grab the dampener and rock it, I can hear this clunking. So, I get under the car, and rock the crank back and forth, and notice little bubbles squirting from the crank at the center main. The crank was broken in two, horizontally, and was being "held" together by the bearing cap. Crazy!!!
Never seen a break like that before, and probably never will again, ....I hope

I jumped pretty hard on my 38 while giving a bud's granduaghter a ride and heard a "rod knock". We were close to home so went back and dropped the pan and everything was tight! WTF! When I put the pan back on I noticed the Harmonic Balancer seperated at the rubber and was "knocking onthe timing cover, also sometimes my dipstick will hit the crank if I put it in wrong and make a ticking noise.

I was gonna say someone trapped in the trunk after breaking in for the cookies.

this one did it for me.... i cracked the bellhousing in my camaro causing the transmission to shift putting stress on the flexplate and eventually causing it to crack all the way around... what a ****ty feeling it was hearing that noise... but a better feeling when i actually found the prob.

i ended up pulling the ****** took it to a guy to have it heliarc welded back together and replaced the flexplate.

haha i liked the wife in the trunk comment

  15. Put me on the "fooled by a strange noise experience" list too Rudy :D
A few years ago I was able to buy a late-model Monte Carlo, bank repo, for $200 smackers cause it had the dreaded 'rod knockin' noise.....nothing but loose converter bolts
Tightened said bolts, a set of cheap wheels, fixed a couple of dents, and found it a new home for $2800

My uncle went down the interstate in his 56 6cyl wide open. Wasn't to long until he called up at work and wanted one of the guys to bring the rollback. One of the employees told him to let the motor idle for a while. He said that he probably pumped the lifters dry.

Same thing with my dad's truck. He decided to wind the truck up in first gear and shift to second. When he pulled in the driveway, sounded like the rod was ready to fly apart. I let it run and then sit for a while. Finally went away.

I'll bet anything a loose torque converter/flexplate was the cause of the 'rod knock' in my '71 Cutl*** S! Where was the internet when I needed it?!? Oh yeah, Al Gore hadn't invented it yet! :D Live and learn!

My stock harmonic balancer was rubbing against the aftermarket aluminum timing cover snout. We checked the rods, torque converter bolts, and everything else we could think of, but never found it. This spring I pulled the timing cover off to powder coat it, and saw the rubbed spot.

We had the flywheel bolts come loose on the 270 GMC. We were about to tear it down when a chance conversation revealed we should look at the flywheel bolts.
