Jan. '68 to Dec. '71, USAF Staff Sargent, Weapons Mechanic. That's the job where you load everthing from 20mm gatling guns to nukes. First with the fighter when it lands, last one there before it takes off.

I couldn't have gotten where I am today without my military service. Grew up dirt poor on a dairy farm. No way I could have gotten a college education on a farming income. GI Bill took care of me.

    Thank you Uncle Sam!

I was at Aberdeen too but in 1968. Went to RVN in August to Troop H 17th Cav in Chu Lai. Then went to Germany to the 517 HEM Co at Thompkins Barracks between Manheim and Heidelberg. Got out in Feb '71.

You don't happen to remember a yellow 1965 Corvette that some guy at the '82 Maint Batallion in Manheim had do you? One of those 283 Chevys that were used in the M114 APCs found it's way into that car in '70.

  13. Hey ZMAN, you got a problem with us veterans sounding off, again? I say sound off every damn day. And go thank a veteran for the freedom to get your panties all tied in a knot now too.

  21. So how's bout a short 'history lesson' from some vets? I'm glad and thankful I didn't go to SEA ('nam, Thailand, etc.), but it was really sad to see anyone, but especially married-with-children guys go. I was young & single and ready to deploy. I volunteered to switch with one guy who got orders in late '71 for Bien Hoa & was having a tough time dealing with it. But personnel would have no part of switching his orders to me (same AFSC), so he could stay with his wife and kid. I think that was the suckiest part of my active duty years. I'm sure there are sadder stories out there, but that really got to me at the time, I've not forgotten him and don't know what ever happened to him after he left.

    Got out as an E4/Sgt

Stationed at Castle AFB, CA with a short trip to Guam (Anderson Field).

BB Stacker/Local EOD (Munitions Maintenance Spec/Local Explosive Ordanance Disposal) loaded 20mm and 50 cal. ammo for B52 training missions and blew up stuff.

To all those who saw combat and faced death... I SALUTE YOU!!!

THANKS to all who have served and to those who continue to serve.

    GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!

  24. My dad was in the Army's 545th Military Police Co., 1st Cavalry Division, Vietnam 66-68. Said he lost a lot of good friends there. He would always stop something just to go shake the hand of a veteran and would say "Welcome back".

My cousin graduates high school in 2010 and is thinking about going into the USAF. My aunt is scared he will join and I told her let him go for it. It takes a lotta guts to make a decision like that.

To anyone who takes care of anyone in the military or outa the military, disabled or abled, friends or family of military.....kudos to you.

Remember that Freedom is not Free.
God Speed to those still in harms way.

  25. I would like to thank the HAMB'rs and especially Ryan! When I was in Iraq a few years ago...this forum kept me going through a very stressful time. For a few minutes a day I could dream about hot rods and jalopys!
All of you contribute...so I thank all of you.

I especially thank all of the service members who served before me. The military is a much better place for my generation...and their sacrifices and hardships have made our country appreciate Veterans now! Thank you!

I am active duty Army 1995-present served in Asia, Europe, Middle East, and US. I don't have any real car talent, which makes me appreciate what I learn here ever more! Fantastic!

    Thanks!
