History How many years did it take to build your current car or truck?

Found this old channeled Roadster body in 1962, sold it in 1975, bought it back 25 years later, still a work in progress. Bob

 

You give me hope for the eventual completion of my own project. At least I'm not the only one carrying a piano in a footrace.

 

I bought the 57 in 1990 and finally drove it in 2009. The 29 started as a frame and cowl in 2013 and I hope to drive it in June

9 months, but no body/paint work to speak of. The paint is from '68

<<<Got the word that I could build it in '01. Saved all my money until '04, then spent it all. Got it running in '07 and drove it as a daily since. Interior in '09. Tore it up a few times. Got 75,000 miles on 'er now. When she gets about 100,000 miles, then I'm going to redo 'er again and keep going.

 

Got a '67 442 in '80, did halfass resto and sold in '84 bought back from the guy's father when he went up the river in '86. Been restoring correctly since, really just started to really get stuff finished since retired last summer. Just finishing up headliner & carpeting and it's done right.

Faster on my '35 Ford Tudor Slant bought in June '14 finished in March1 '16. Older, more time more money to throw at it.

 

I started the resto of my 63 Corvette in 1978. Most mechanicals are 90% completed. Numbers matching 327/340. Not finished yet. Only been at it for 38 years. Not driven since I started. Don't rush me.

Five years this time, but a false start in the 1990's, and it was put aside in the mid 1960's. So fifty plus years to build it as I wanted it.

A fair number of modifications from original, and 2000+ hours of my time.

 

Thirty years and counting. It's the journey. This is winter, 1987. I was 21. Notice I ran Americans on it back then, too.

 

20 yrs. I've been messing with my stude, built it, totalled it 3 months later, then it sat in the garage for almost 10 yrs. Pulled it out, rebuilt it, then altered the wheelbase. Been having a ton of fun drag racing with it. Interior is still not done, new 464 inch Buick for it is almost done, hope to be deep in the tens with the new power.

I have had my '29 roadster for a bit over 15 years. It was a running and driving car, though not road worthy and very rusty when I bought it @ 2002 started taking it apart soon after, and then stalled out in a million pieces until last month. I am starting on it again ( got to find all the pieces again, tons of new parts everywhere except where they should be ) work will be slow with my bad back but I am going to do what I can when I can. retired now, have time, but now fixed income

 

15 months of evenigs and weekends trashings, with lots of help from a friend and his dad,Who without i never could have done it on my own.
(had a other project sitting for twenty years)

Danny I know it says current, but as I put the picture of my COE on which is the current vehicle that's taken me from mid 2011 to the beginning of 2015, about four years.

This just made me think of the others.

My Center Door has been worked on recently and to be honest it's better now than when I first rebuilt it way back in 1978.
However the longest build for me was my sons 29 Model "A" this took just short of seven years.
The quickest build I have ever done was my 27 Model "T" coupe and that took just two and a half years, and I don't know why

But what's already been said I think is that we are never completely finished, it's a in our blood.

 

Most take me about a year give or take... been buying them closer to done because building them from ground up just costs too much... my 55 gasser on the other hand has been getting built for past 6 years but always getting pushed back to prioritize on others.or changing my mind on the direction of the build.. hopefully it gets done this year....

Two one year chunks. Fortunately the body was in fairly good shape. Over a year, I yarded out the flathead, three speed and banjo rearend. I split the wishbone and put in a smallblock/th350, paralell leafs and a 10bolt. I got it on the road and found out the takeout motor/tranny was worn out and I didn't like the way it drove. So over the next winter, I rebuilt the engine, did my own tranny rebuild and put in a Mustang II front suspension. It runs and drives like a gokart and i can jump in it any time and go....

Took me right at 10 years to build the yellow deuce. Body was made from 2 body's. Is now a nice all steel hot rod.

 

My Fine 39 took 5 years. Did all the work myself except the paint, and I helped with that.

 

It took me almost 9 years to complete my coupe. I also took a 2 year break to build my stepson a 68 chevy truck and a summer to get married and finally a summer of a kitchen renovation. I was motivated my the hillclimb in Colorado and got it together just in time for it last fall. I still have to put a top on it and interior. It will be more than 10 years before I get it all finished.

 

My coupes sat like this for about 15 years. But in the shed. But i have done a 39 roadster, 64 holden, got married had kids and built a house in the mean time. So that has slowed progress abit.

Bought frame, body, hood, 4 fenders, running boards, deck lid, dropped 5inch front axle filled & drilled, radiator shell & grill in 1962 for $500. No engine, no trans., no rear end, no seat.---Wife wanted to know what I was going to do with all that "Junk"---She wanted new drapes!!
Finished in 1968----All black enamal with Cragars & white letter Goodyears.
Repainted in 1976-----Blue with black fenders.
Repainted & upgrades in 1996---Metallic maroon with black fenders.

I got my '40 in 1970, drove it for a few years and finally parked it in '79. Tore it down to the bare frame in '87, made good progress for a couple of years then got sidetracked by life, career and a move. Got divorced in 2002 and it went into storage at my son's shop. Finally got interested in it again a couple of years ago; just got the paint done last month and am slowly putting it back together. Working too much to have much time to spend on it now, maybe when I retire... but, then I won't have the money to put into it.

Someday...

It took us 7 years, and it has been done for 8 years. I don't know where the time went?

 

When I was 11 in 1974 I bought a 1939 chevy truck, I am still working on it. I bought a 1940 chevy truck to build in 1989 so I would have a better idea how to do the 39. I still work on the 40 but I have been driving it since 1998. I bought the 41 coupe in 1999 so I would have more room on trips than the truck, I finished it in 2001. The Nova I have had since 1981 drove it(rarely) with poor body work and white paint to hide the poor body work until 2009 when I finished a rotisserie redo on it.
