have any of you guys used an 85` camaro 5 speed from behind a v-8 ? do you know how much torque they will stand ? want to put a 5 speed behind my 496" , have one out of the above camaro ........ or does anyone have a 4+1 , nash , richmond or liberty street 5 speed for sale ? thanks , ratso
Uh...is that 496 cubic inches or CC's? Hell no that Camaro trans won't survive! I have one behind a Chevy 348, at best 350 HP and I drive it like an old lady so I don't break it. You need one of those serious units from Keisler. A friend has one thats rated good to 600 ft-lbs in a Cobra.
The Camaro unit was only rated about 240 lb/ft of torque. The bad *** aftermarket unit for the mustangs was 330 lb/ft. You need a serious aftermarket 5 speed or a really well built muncie. Is OD your main interest? I bought a M21 from Auto Gear with .86 4th gear and 1 to 1 in 3rd. They wouldn't tell me what it's rated for, but when I asked about 450 hp and similar torque, they said I need not worry.
thanks guys , didn`t think it would work ..had the camaro trans ( free) I found a 4+1 5 speed for $ 1300.00 w/ shifter .... mostly need to slow the motor down on the highway , runs around 3500 rpm at maybe 45 mph ..... hate melting the motor thanks , ratso
a doug nash/richmond 4+1 5 speed is not an overdrive trans.5 gear is still 1:1.that trans has a really low first.it is designed to use a high rearend gear, but still be able to get off the line.richmond makes a new 5-speed that has an overdrive in 5th,but it is $3600.00.unless you are very lucky,i don't think that is what you have. -danny
It's pretty funny... When I read the ***le, the first thought in my mind was "As long as it isn't from a 3rd Gen Camaro"...
