So yeah the ***le. Converted the 57 Cadillac over to a three wire today because the generator kicked the bucket and replacements were $$$ instead of $. It's a standard GM unit.

Yes I did the usual check the belt levelness and it is perfectly fine. So at idle its vibrating back and forth a good 1/4 inch in total stroke, more it up the RPM range and it settles out just fine. Is this going to kill the thing in 100 miles or 10K miles, not much more I can do to strengthen the mount.

Seems to be spreading first the TBird killed its unit, then this and the truck has been acting up as well on hot start.

I don't know if it will kill it, but I'd certainly be concerned about that much movement. It should be held more rigidly than that.

  3. With that much movement I'd expect internal broken wires in a few hundred miles. I think you are taunting the octopus leaving it like that. LOL

Is the bracket solid enough, without seeing a photo it's a guessing game. Alternator should be solid when mounted to an engine with only the belt moving. Whatever is causing your problem will become apparent when it fails.

If it moves that much something will fail, just don't know if it will be the alternator or the mounts that fail first. Post up a couple of pictures of the mounts.

It's solidly mounted on the bottom I ground out the factory generator mount so that I could use the lower mount and then I had to heat up and bend a bit of the upper mount. Will take a photo tonight to show

If everything is running true and the belt is in good shape, it should not vibrate like that. Something else is wrong with the setup.

Maybe your heat&bend on the mount is allowing that movement.

  9. Maybe you are using the wrong belt that does not match the Alternator pulley groove.
    Pic would help....... images.jpg

  11. Tell the truth, you're using an old belt, aren't you?? Buy a new one, it's cheaper than buying an alternator AND mounts after the vibes kill both.

Make sure and tighten the pivot bolts that go thru mount after getting the belt and adjuster tightened. Otherwise, the movement will break adjuster arm. Any movement after these bolts are tight, will require strengthening mount.

X4 if you can see it "bending" it'll break. You may need just a simple brace to fix it. Think triangles.
