Hey all, after finally getting out to bleed the brakes, I'm ready to put her back on the ground, but as I was setting the brakes, I notice some free play in the right-rear axel...

If I grab onto it (with the drum off) I can move it straight in and out about a 16th of an inch or so...no movement up, down, or side to side like it's sloppy or anything...just in and out.

    Is that too much?

It shouldn't really move but I wouldn't worry unless you get some noise from the rear or the rear gear oil leaks into the brakes .

I hope nothing leaks! lol... I replaced all the seals, backing plate gaskets and everything I could with regard to the rear axel and housing and backing plates, etc.

I know I torqued the bolts through the little hole in the axel plate or whatever (holds the wheel studs in it), but I'll double check those tonight to make sure.

And I'll definitely make sure to listen for any wierdness when I get it on the road sometimes this month...hopefully...
    Thanks, Jim.

I would check that the Axle bearing and retainer ring. Make sure they are pressed to where they need to be.

Sorry. I ment to say retainer plate. Thats what holds the axle in.

Hmmm, I only pulle the axles to replace the seals and gaskets last fall. and the bearing looked brand new. The shaft slid right out into my hands and it hasn't been driven since the late 70's so I know it's any "wear" that could have insued lately. I've only rolled in in and out of a garage a few times since.

Retainer ring you say huh. ? I'll have to look into that further. Thanks for the idea.

The axle bearing should be tight against a step on the axle, but even if it isn't, that will not cause the axle to move in/out Just make sure that the 4 bolts/nuts that hold the axle in place are tight. Don't think that 1/16" is that big a deal, but its been a LONG time since I've done one.

thanks guys, yep all four bolts are nice and tight on the retainer plate (thanks Ray). Guess I'll just let it go for now, but keep my ears peeled and see if I notice and wobble or anything "loose" feeling once I get it running.
