Absolutely none. I never built a car with the thought of selling it in mind. Never sold one that I REALLY wanted to sell either...sometimes "Mr. Needmore" makes choices for you.

My car is like a part of me. It is build with no thoughs of ever selling. It's a life long afair. Sure things happen, but sell my car? Never! It's more than not going to a good friend or family when I'm gone.

Not at all. I built it for me. I've had it for 25 years and it's not for sale.

  5. I just build everything the way I think it should be if it's my car,a customers car or a car for sale. That's what makes Hot-Rodders Unique !! >>>>.

The whole problem with this thread is. Everyone that builds their own car. their blood and their own preferences are built into each and every car.Its tragic when someone needs to sell their ride. The best advise i can give you for resale is keep it stock and simple. My 2 cents

  7. I build for me...what I like.
I used to build cars/bikes to order.
You would think that was easy, but people can't make up their minds to save their own lives. Now I build stuff the way I see it in my head. If someone likes it, they will buy it. If not, I will drive the tires off it.

I wish I had a camera in my head; it would make it easier to show people what I see.

not enough. I buy/sell cars for my only income. Some late model, most are HAMB friendly. We usually build one or two per year in addition to most that we improve. The ones we improve usually help generate some profit. The ones we build are to our own taste. They always go over budget, so get priced accordingly. For the most part, I get emotionally attached, so I am not very negotiable on the ones we built. You can imagine how successful I am at selling over-priced hotrods that I really like! Now I am paying for storage and don't have the time to drive even half of them!

Maybe I should consider it, but honestly dont even think about it. I end up with so much work in my cars (just cause Im slow) that I could never begin to make money on one of them anyway. Besides that, I find that once I spread a build out over three to five years, its cheaper than bars, strippers (or so Im told), golf, basketball games, gardening and flight lessons.

If you build it right to begin with the resale value is included free of charge. Build it like **** and that is what you are left with.

  12. Not one bit as far as I'm concerned.

If resale value was of any concern I would probably install A/C. ;)
My car won't be getting A/C.

I'm not rich, nor do I have enough space to keep every car I've ever owned. Therefore I need to do two things, build everything myself, and always watch the expenses so I don't put so much into a car that I put my limited financial situation at risk. I love cars, and I build what I like, but it's tough to justify losing $10,000-$20,000 on a car every few years. But by doing everything myself, and buying carefully (as in used, on sale or online) I can have a nice car and not go to divorce court over it.

Resale isn't a factor for me, just as so many others have said, because if I'm building it, I'm building it to suit me. I don't sit and think, hmmmm I wonder what people will think of this modification ??? If I want to do it, I do it. I'm sure that I'm turning away potential buyers by doing some of the stuff I like, but I don't care.

Anything I have ever bought with the idea of resale, usually get's very little more than a tune up and a clean up, and are gone before I even think about what I could do to it. These cars are not projects, only a means to fund my hobby.

In the end, I build them for me, not for anyone else. It just so happens that someone else has liked enough of what I've done to MY last 6 cars that they were sold so that I could go back into my garage with a new project, a few new tools, and a new vision.

I've always been drawn to a car because I liked it, liked the way it looks, maybe even to "save" it..even the lowliest 58 Rambler four-door sedan..been thrifty, focused, on what it takes to get it back on the road. Drive it around for awhile, have some fun, then start mentioning its for sale, maybe even sneak a sign in the back window. Then sure enough some other guy/gal/car nerd/idiot takes a liking to it for a fair price and its off to the next one..Now, I couldn't sell my 64 Riviera, had it too long and too$$, it has a shady past, it is a San Antonio,Laredo car and spent a couple lost years in Mexico..same with the 48 Cadillac, I owe its good condition to being buried many years in Bastrop pine needles..

  16. I build to enjoy, and be safe. If it goes up for sale, there has usually been a fair share of fun in it, and it is time for something new. I have some that I kick myself for selling, but I have learned the lesson early, that the ones I Really like, no matter what the cir***stance or who wants it, I am not selling it. I built it or bought it and customized it for a reason, whether it is for the look, speed, or other and some day I am going to want to do it again. I wish that insurance companies would just give you a blanket policy after you get to five. Remember you can never have to many old cars! My wife calls me a car horder, and I only have 8. Well six if I don't count hers.

  17. There is an old saying:

(If you want to make a small fortune fooling around with old cars, start with a large fortune............)

  18. If I were building with resale in mind I would be building muscle cars.
I doubt anyone is going to get rich building traditional hot rods.

I always try and keep re-sale value in mind but it rarely gets in the way of how I want the car to look. I don't like to just throw money at it though. When I was in
my American 5 spoke phase I grubbed up 4 15X7 ET's and polished them myself (spokes and all). When I went into my Wide White phase I actually ran port-a-walls
for a while (oops, they don't work worth a **** on radials) but then I knew that I liked them and called Coker and ordered what I needed. Ran painted steelies with spider caps until late last year when I found a nice pair of 15x6 chrome reverse for $20.00,
matched them up with one 14x6 from a swap meet and one from a buddy and presto a set of chrome reverse for about $40.00. I only have room for 1 car so if I decide I want a different car the current one probably finances it, thus resale is on my mind.

0% Resale has never been a factor in any of my vehicles and I've had close to 100 in the last 50 odd years.

Me and my pops used to restore 69-70 mach 1s to make money to build cooler, older cars that would not turn a profit. after you memorize a particular car it gets cheaper and cheaper to restore them.

  22. With my GT 350 yes but with the Merc, not quite as much. I want to keep the body close to stock but i might do a little customizing. Tail lights and louvers.
When I build the next car I have in mind, probably not at all. It's going to be a ground up scratch built vision. Nail head powered R-PU.

i haven't read but the first two pages of this thread so this might have been covered already but.....

i primarly but T buckets. and i build them for my self but after one project is as far as i want to go with it, the next one is already built in my head. the thng i tell people is someday that car is going to be for sale. the buyer is going to expect to see certain things on the car. if i see a '49 chevy truck axle on a t bucket, no matter how nice the work is, i done looking at it. if it has a tube or I beam axel then it has my interest as a possible purchase.

no matter if you build to keep or to buy, spend the money for the right parts. you or your loved one will be happy you did one day.

I just returned from Ace Hardware with $96 worth of triple chrome ****on head and acorn nuts (for the third time today). I saved receipts on everything for awhile, but when I started counting what I had spent on chrome nuts and bolts, I threw them away, thinking this would not be good if my wife found these. I don't expect to sell for a profit, but the fun I am having is priceless!
