I know you guys could answer this question for me. Aproximately, how much HP/TQ does an average starter produce?
Enough to move the car a ways. How much torque does it take to overcome the typical rolling resistance?
IRRC..... HP= (Volts x Amps)/746. I'm sure the amps (guess #1; 150??) required depend on the temp of the motor/oil, and I would derate the volts to 10 or less (guess #2) because of drop during high load. Gives you a number around 2 HP if the amps guess is close; otherwise adjust accordingly. And HP= (Torque X RPM)/63000. So Torque = (HP x 63000)/RPM. ........Torque is in inch-pounds for these equations, and RPM is the starter RPM. Hafta (guess #3) that one, too. But I ain't no 'lectrical injuneer. Just a simple old gear head trying to make his way in an electronic world.
I had worked for a well known aftermarket motorcycle starter company a while back. We actually modified Nippondenso forklift truck starters for Harley applications. Our starters were rated by kilowatts.We offered 1.4 to 2.0kw., which translates to approx. 1.3-1.9 horsepower. Frank
