Hot Rods How much longer is a 5 Window vs. 3 Window?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RoadFarmer, Aug 19, 2011.

  1. Anybody know how much longer a 5 window is vs a 3 window?
    For a '32
and if you know for a '33-'34

Thanks I was curious.....and being 6'5'' any extra inches of leg room would really help

  2. Wheel base is the same for 3-5 window.

  3. hmmm never woulda guessed that....What was Ford's reasoning behind the two styles then? Just to spice it up?

  4. If your asking which would fit you better, the 3 window has longer doors as well as suicide doors which makes for easier entrance and exit for taller folks.

Good question Roadfarmer. I would like to know for interest as well. I know sitting in a 3 window I have pretty good room. Paul from Welder Series is a tall guy and he has a 3 window. Me personally I am 6'11" and I am building a roadster!! I will be putting my seat a little under the rear lip. So guys.... which has more leg room, a 3 or 5 window?

They should be pretty much the same - 3 window has easier access but poorer vision. 5 window cabin is airy and lighter. If you really want a lot of legroom maybe you should be looking at a 1940 coupe - the 1940 Opera coupe with the jump seats allows you to mount the seat well back if you eliminate or relocate the jump seats....

I've never measured either coupe but from sitting in both I would think with the stock firewall they are both about the same interior wise. You can gain some extra room by removing the package tray and move the seat back several more inches.

The doors on a 1932 Ford 3 window coupe are at least 5 or 6 inches longer than the 5 window door.

    My 3W fits me great ( but I am " ONLY " 6 foot 2 inches tall ).

It is a LOT easier to enter/exit a 3W than a 5 window. Their doors are small.

I also like the 3W dash a lot more. :D

Well, a stocker will not tell you anything because Ford bolted down the seats in the same relationship to steering and everything else. Checked the salesman's book that gives a lot of measurements body by body...so, the question becomes one of figuring out how far you can move the seating once the package tray is out. I think the roof area might well be a little longer on a 3-window.

You might want to reconsider doing this, the school of hard knocks department thinks it will be hard on your neck and head. Gary

Also ... I would imagine that a fiberglass coupe would actually have a little more room than a stocker. Henry Ford coupes have a package tray behind the seat. It is about 3 to 4 inches wide. I removed the one from my 3W.

When I bought my 3W, the original seat frame was there but the seat tracks were missing :( I hunted for a pair for a year or two but I finally bought a pair of universal seat tracks for a RV. With them adapted to the original seat ... I have more forward/rearward seat adjustment than the stock seat tracks.

My seat goes all the way back ... so even a long legged driver has lots of room. :)

Thanks Gary I will have to take it into some serious consideration when I get to that part of the build. I have been in one that was done that way and wasn't too bad for a few minutes. But for a long ride it could be a pain.

The seat is pretty far back in my 27 (but nothing like under the rear cab ledge) and very comfortable. But I have considered putting a padded area of some sort (a circle or rectangle shape behind the seat, like a fixed head rest mounted to the back of the cab) as I'm anticipating a good skull fracture should I get rear-ended by some moron. But hot rod vanity (ie not cool to look at) has been keeping me from doing anything about it so far. Gary

FWIW, the wheelbase is the same on ALL the passenger cars (ie; coupes, sedans, open cars) and pickups.

The term Gentile (from Latin gentilis, by the French "gentil", female: "gentille", meaning of or belonging to a clan or tribe) refers to non-Israelite peoples or nations in English translations of the Bible.

Latin and subsequently English translators selectively used the term gentiles when the context for the base term "peoples" or "nations", Hebrew, גוי (goy) and נכרי (nokhri) in the Hebrew Bible and the Greek word ἔθνη (éthnē) in the New Testament, indicated non-Israelite peoples or nations. The term gentiles is derived from Latin, used for contextual translation, and not an original Hebrew or Greek word from the Bible.

    WOW ...
I did not know all those Hebrew or non-Israelite folks has 3 window coupes.

33-34 5 windows are a couple inches longer in the cab area than a 3 window. You can tell this by the distance from the decklid to the bead just below the rear window.

One hell of a place to ask a simple question. Seems no one yet has been able to answer a plain out and out question! But, what do you expect, with the thousands of morons on any forum. What is the matter with a simple "I don't know"? Instead of the foolish stupid answers given and trying to hide their ignorance. Guess I've been around too long. You can banish me from here. Maybe I could sleep a little better. Jay Y.

Just went out and measured them for you. Keep in mind I was by Myslelf so measurements are the best I could do alone but they will give you an idea. I was suprised that the 34 is really not much bigger than the 32's but they sure look a lot bigger from a visual perspective. All measurements were taken from Steel Henry cars.

32 frame length end to end is 148" and I think they all share 106" wheel base.

34 frame lenght end to end is 150". Not sure of 34 wheel base as my frame is not assembled right now. Check HAMB Tech.

32 5 window inside cab length from dash mounting surface to rear window mounting surface is 45" long. 32 5 window width between door pillars is 48" wide (widest point of cab).

32 3 window inside cab length from dash mounting surface to rear window mounting surface is 47.5" long. 32 3 window width between door pillars is 49.5" wide (widest point of cab).

32 roadster inside cab length from windshield tab surface to rear of cab openning is 42". 32 roadster cab width between strikers is 48'.

34 5 window inside lenght from dash mounting surface to rear window mounting surface is 50.25" long. 34 5 window width between door pillars is 49.25" wide (widest point of cab).

Good luck and let me know if you need any other measurements.
