I have finished prepping my car and planning to paint it this weekend. Anybody know the amount of paint i need? Its for a 30 Model A sedan, no fenders. I'm painting the body, the jams, garnish molding and the hood top (no sides). I was thinking of painting the roof with cheaper paint. i will be putting padding and vinyl on the roof anyway. I am thinking of putting money down on PPG Concept. Just want to make sure i get enough but not trying to have alot left over. A gallon kit is around $400. Also, this is my first paint job. Any guesses? Thanks, Bryan
Pick one of these colors and get a single stage kit , You get everything needed . reducer/ hardener etc... 1 gallon will be less then $100. http://www.tcpglobal.com/restorationshop/rspcolors.aspx
i would say a gallon would be enough as it is best to have a little extra for later touch up and if you decide to paint something else the same color.
You didn't say what color. If it's a hi hiding color like a white or black, 2 qts will be plenty. Red and yellow will require extra coats for coverage, 3 qts will do.
What is the color? I use a tinted sealer before I lay the paint down, I'd buy 2 quarts that would be plenty for me, if you feel gun shy buy 3. If it was my first time I would buy a less expenses brand of paint like Nasson, but beware they sometimes don't cover that well. If you were going black I'd buy tractor paint with hardner...Where do you plan on painting this car? Good Luck!
One gallon should do it and for your first paint job I reccomend a solid color Just put alot of coats on ,Spray a coat and go in the house for 10 to 15 minutes between coats ,Every painter gets anxious ,I blame it on the fumes ,Buy some wax and degreaser also to wipe car down before painting and follow up after that with a tack rag ,Make sure shop is free of dust as much as possible .When spraying I believe the car gets a positive charge and dust is a negative charge ,I could have that backwards ,But I know its right ,
its going to be off white on tan side. i have grey primer so i hope that isn't an issue. this will be painted outside under a car canopy with sides. i'm putting a tarp under it too. I will also be spraying water on the ground and possibly the walls to hold down the dust and static electricity. I looked at the Omni paint but have read about the coverage issues. i looked at the Restoration Shop kits (TCPGlobal) but don't know how good they are. this car will probably not be garage kept and will be driven as much as possible. The water on the ground outside can really cause a lot of problems, if you get an angle at it the crap will get airborne and right into your paint, better of using a sweeping compound a couple of times to kill light dust. Run a wire to a grounded pipe from somewhere on the car, this should help neutralize the static charge from all the plastic the wind and the paint shot. Why is a Bisque colored paint costing you 400 a gallon? I paid 277 for red 2 stage Sherwin. For first paint get a gallon, please wear a good mask that is right for the job, this stuff can really kick your ass.
It's good stuff and white is pretty easy to spray. White hides a lot of sins. It will give you years of service. I buy paint from them and had nothing but good service.
i haven't looked too much at Sherwin Williams paint. Is it any good? I'd hate to drop $400 on PPG Concept Single stage when a cheaper paint will do. I'm just worried about the durability of a cheaper paint considering that this will be driven alot and not garage kept often. I will no doubt be wearing a respirator and paint suit. Bryan
why single stage??,, Base coat clear coat is easy to touch/blend up if scratched or dented without spraying the entire panel,,sprays metalics better, and easier to mix the next batch if you keep the mixing code inside the label(if the paint store mixing it is on target),not to mention it dries way faster for smaller parts if you use a quick clear so dirt, bugs, runs dont happen,,,, If you are going for the old school look i love duponts centari,my 10 year old can spray it and it comes out like glass without all the sticky overspray/paint all over everything, ppgs concept is famous for that and is like water,in my opinion,,,,
Waxing really makes paint last , so duribility comes down to how you want to maintain it. BC/ CC is a good option but costs twice as much if not more , a kit on the TPC site is about $200. I'M using it on my Impala soon.
I wish they would bring back laquer, The sherwins is sticky messy for overspray and very watery, I was told a gallon would cover my 38 panel every surface, 5 gallons later at 275 a gallon plus clear and additives we still have a few things to shoot. I go crazy now.
