Hot Rods How much power can a banjo rear take?

  1. When I built my roadster back in 70’s I did what @willys36 showed above. Thanks for the pics!
    I used two 28 spline short side axles from two 69 Cougars.
    Ground the axle gears as shown, and used NOS earlyFord spider gears and cross.
    Machined out the carrier and ring gear as shown.
    Set up the tubes with the later bearing cups, used the 28 spline axle with bearing and the ring gear as a fixture to locate the ends for welding. The inner end of each axle was trimmed off 1/4”.
    My center election was a 201 Halibrand but the guts were as shown above.
    Still running behind a mild 350 SBC.

  3. I considered welding on modern bearing bosses but decided to modify the early Ford so I could keep the old Ford backing plates to honor the original Mysterion.

    You generally locate the cylinder somewhere on the pedal or linkage system that will give you about 3"-4" of cylinder stroke distance. Gives you the ability to adjust how fast the clutch can draw inertia out of the engine's rotating assy. Inertia energy discharge rate is typically what breaks drivetrain parts, not actual engine torque.
