Technical How much power can I expect from my Fe?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by tartar_sammich, Feb 11, 2015.

  1. I'm building a 401 FE (390 bored .060 over). Parts we have are
Forged Pistons with floating wrist pins, machinist said 9.7-9.8:1 compression
    Stock crank
    Performer RPM intake
    Holley 670
    Grind of a Comp 292H , .245/.245 duration, 560/560 lift, 110 LSA, comp part number is K-33-240-4
C4AE Heads, hardened seats, new everything else
    Headers and dual exhaust
I don't know if I'll be able to dyno it or not, what kind of power do you guys think I can expect from this combination?

  3. Probably somewhere around 350...

  4. Ya know I have re-read your original question and I was way off base with 27 your question does not require a number for an answer, you asked what kind not how much. DuhOh

What kind of power? Ford power of course, it was a trick question wasn't it.

It will depend on whether or not you run out of carb on the top end, the cam has some pretty good lift to it and if the heads flow well enough and you can keep it fed, you should be in the 330 to 400 hp range. Better get it on a dyno and tell us.

Get on the FE forum or FE Power - those guys know their stuff

  7. Well you can squeeze 390 from a 390 using stock parts so the 350-400 HP range is probably not out of the question. I wouldn't count on it if you are not a tuner.

The question is not what the possibilities are but what the probabilities are isn't it.

With an FE, it aint so much the horsepower as it is the torque, and they have that in spades.

I have and '67 390 in the '47 Hudson in my avatar. I don't know what kind of power it makes but it pulls that big ol car around nicely because of the torque. It has a cam but I'm not sure on the specs of it. Other than that I believe it to be stock and tired.

I've yet to be amazed at the wealth of knowledge available here!

  13. I would think you would have more HP thsan the 406 engines had. the hedders are a big plus. the stock FE cast iron exhaust manifold,s leave a lot to be desired. quality of the fuel is going to be a question. Ive owned high compression FE,s that would ping on the really good Sunoco 260 we had back in the sixties. you need to upgrade to electronic ignition.
