I'm sure guys dropping that kind of coin are building pretty high end cars but I also find it interesting how guys always seem to want to scrimp on paint when it is a huge part of the personality (for lack of a better term) of your car. I think the problem is alot of guys who don't spend much don't because they don't factor it into the build cost and then are scrounging in the end to come up with the cash to do it. I would think that at a minimum you should factor 25% of your total build costs on paint and body and probably closer to 1/3. Which if you are builing a $30,000 dollar car, which is not outragous, would put you in the $7-10K range for paint.

  2. Told you this might be interesting.:D

A $20,000.00 paint job on a $300,000.00 car sounds reasonable to me.

    A $20,000.00 paint job on a $30,000.00 car doesn't.

Two things here-first,is that $30 K car value with or without the paint? Let's say, by your figures, $8K for paint and body. So if my car was worth $30K before, now it would be worth $38K and I've spent 21%. If the car was $30K after the paint, then I spent 36%.

At the high end of car prices, you've got lots of room for motor, interior, special parts. $100 K car with a $30K paint job gives you some nice room for a $25K motor and $20K interior. If you have, like mine, a sort of $20K car, then spending $5-7K more on paint may be "required" but isn't really realistic.

How much paint does it take for a Model A coupe? I'm picking solid colors, not likely going base coat/clear coat and I'll look for a nice painter in the $3500-$4500 range. If you are a painter and can't/won't do it for that, that's okay. I'll be alright.

Here is the other car that I fixed up. The paint and material cost about 2k, this does not include any labor. That car had been painted 5-6 years ago. On this car he used dupont black bc/cc and in the clear I had him use violet pearl in the first coat. The price of material has almost doubled since then.

This car was a 1 owner, always garaged, with 30k actual miles. The car is arrow straight, that took a lot of work. The same guy is doing my 47 now.

My point is most guys don't factor that cost into their build until it is time to do it and then say they don't have bottomless pockets. Because paint is usually the last thing done other than maybe upholstery (which probably falls in the same boat as paint on this issue) I would bet alot of guys are hard pressed to pull together as much money as they would like to get it done because they haven't planned for and researched it's costs.

Ah, your bait worked, got me to reply one more time.

Well, well. Seeing yourself as a pumk bully, in your mind it seems that you actually believe you can shut people down with your push, shove, belittle, etc. .............. what name am I gonna come back as? Get a clue. I don't hide, never have, why would I want to do that?

You are so ate up with hearing yourself blow you haven't even read my posts. Now you've twisted what I said, (your words, "i want you to show us your $300 paint job that even rivals a $5k driver job and account for all materials and expenses.") I never said anything close to that. I said materials after the body work is done. Next you'll be adding the property taxes and taking a buddy to lunch on the cost of a paint job. Back up a couple of posts and read the pictures. After the body work was done, the paint, sandpaper, primer, strainers, stirrers, electricity to pump the air, and don't forget the beer, all cost less than $300 per car.

I haven't questioned the quality of your paint job, how could I, since I've never seen one. But, (as you have questioned mine) , if you can't put on Acrylic Enamel in one shot and get a beautiful job, without buffing it, and don't offer that option to your customer, then you ain't a painter.

If you could read a page and retain it without picking little parts out of context, you would note that I have repeatedly stated that where I save is by buying hundred dollar a gallon paint.

I hear it a lot, guys claiming to be great painters but claiming that a certain paint is ****. I call all of them out. If they can't do a beautiful job with any run of the mill Acrylic Enamel and or need to buff it afterwards, then they aren't any better a painter than I am. If my word that two of my cars won top honors isn't good enough for you, then go **** yourself.

I have no fault with your paint job, But, if your claim that PPG Acrylic Enamel is ****, and if you can't put it on and get an absolutely beaautiful paint job, then you ain't the painter you claim to be. That puts you right down here with the rest of us that paint our cars and are quite happy with them. Actually I believe that you are good at what you do, and you've let your mouth overload your ***.

I'm calling you out; Right here and now, after the body work is done, quote a price, naming the paint and product you will use.

You are laughable at best... Why are you getting so mad? I guess the truth hurts.

    Really...

    Your own words say different.

LOL, I guess you don't like quality, there is not a painter out there that can lay it down good enough that a cut and buff will not improve it. If you think different then you are even more ignorant about this than I though.

I never called PPG Acrylic ****ty paint. You are delusional.

It's in your court, we're still waiting to see your $300 award winning job.

And sorry I don't paint over others bodywork, way to much at stake. Bodywork is part of the paint job, bodywork, primer, blocking, it all goes together.

I'm thinking there's beginning to be a bit of hyperbole on moths sides, and some pretty high emotions. And, I will admit painting is not a skill I possess.

But, 29NaSH did post pictures of his work and what it cost-so how about it Zman-can you do the same? Not all the high end stuff-we'd expect that to be great. Surely you have done cars worth $15-25K-so post some pics with what you did and what it cost. Fair is fair.

  13. Zman has posted many pics of his Buick over the years. He has nothing to prove.

"Al"29nash on the other hand is full of BS. Even with my brodeal pricing when I painted the Touring with $50/gal urethane I had well over 5-600 in materials when said and done.

I don't know anyone locally who'll shoot a prepped car for under $1000.oo. I know some who WILL rent the booth though.
$300 for a gallon of good primer,,whew!!! I use the $125.oo a gallon stuff and some times $200.oo expoxy like on my chevy. Most the shops around here still use Lacquer primer for profitability and it shows a few months later.
On my big ole car (a '48 Chevy 2dr sedan). I have literally been doing bodywork everyday since June 1rst. That includes firewall smoothed, frame holes welded around the engine, frenched grill, headlights, all trim holes welded, fenders shortened, hood sectioned, nosed, drip rails shaved, etc.
I should shoot it in the next few days.
So if someone says it's fast and easy their full of it.
